Let's Have a Clearing House for Care Package Ideas and Addresses

Many of us send care packages to our sons and daughters scattered around the globe. Often we would like to do more....

I thought we might use this space to develop ideas of things to ship to our troops protecting our freedom. Also we might look at setting up a list of addresses that we could use to ship to. It is Girl Scout cookie season and I know one of our members sends cookies to troops all over. I've sent phone cards to combat areas through the USO so our soldiers could call home for the holidays. I'm sure there are hundreds of ideas out there....lets support our troops by sending them the things from home they miss and to let them them know that America supports them.

I've had some requests for the care package label template:

Ken I think it is cheaper if the box is under #10 right?

Been meaning to get here and post this . . . I've been checking my outgoing care packages and found that the Priority Mail Flat Rate box to APO/FPO is NOT usually the best way to go unless you are sending something very heavy. The flat rate is $12.20 online, $12.95 at the post office. I sent several at that rate and then switched to regular Priority Mail boxes by weight (NOT flat rate). My last few packages cost $9.10, $9.80 and $8.13

Pretty significant savings!

Drink mixes were really popular on my Tiger Cruise!!!  I would send bunches of magazines covering a number of topics and I know they would get shared among the shops that way.   And consider printing a bunch of the NavyDads labels to attach to your items...it is a fast and simple way to say "Thanks" to those serving!!

Ricky, there are a number of items that are often requested by the sailors.  The drink mixes are one of them.  Snack items are usually appreciated because the vending machines on the ship tend to run out of the more popular items.  My son is also on deployment.  The things I have sent him are bagged peanuts/nuts mixes, gum, granola bars, and even his favorite potato chips.  But, the most requested item by far is beef jerky.  I have also sent my son magazines with topics of his interests.  As Roderick continues thru this deployment, he will have additional items to add to his wish list.

Also, phone cards are great things to send our sailors.  I've kepted my son well stocked with them and he calls home quite regularly.  I think the cards are more for me than him, lol.

Your son will look forward to getting those care packages.  Send them as often as you can.

Good luck to your son on his deployment.

Greetings my son Roderick just deployed to the USS Bataan and one of the first things that he requested was powdered milk and drink mixes due to frequency that the ship runs out of milk any thing else any one can share with me

Below is an email I received from a sailor currently deployed with the USS Howard.  I wanted to share this email with the group members to reaffirm just how much sending out care packages mean to our service men and women.  My son is also aboard the Howard.  Every two weeks I have been making large batches of homemade jerky and sending it in care packages to my son and his shipmates.  Just knowing these packages make the days brighter for those serving our country warms my heart.  I'm so very grateful for all they do for us.

"Ms. Robbins,

I wanted to take a second and thank you.  Not just for the jerky (which was delicious by the way) but for thinking of us while we are out here.  It’s really inspiring to know that someone who has never met us before took time out of her day to make our day a little better.  Its little things like that that get us through deployments.

Thanks again,"

if you go the very top right of the page, you'll see a search box...not the best, but it's functional.......

Since there is not a search feature to tell me if this has already been covered I will post it to be sure. For those with family that has boots in the sand here are instructions for hand made cool ties http://www.martinworks.com/hero/hugs.html and for the filler http://www.watersorb.com/prices.htm My cub scout pack is planning on getting together next school year and making a bunch of these to send out late winter

Tom - I think the "Snail Mail" has been on steroids, because my son is in Baghdad right now and his boxes got there is 8 days!! the longest a box has taken is 14 days...   I'm still trying to comprehend it ... lol!
