Let's Have a Clearing House for Care Package Ideas and Addresses

Many of us send care packages to our sons and daughters scattered around the globe. Often we would like to do more....

I thought we might use this space to develop ideas of things to ship to our troops protecting our freedom. Also we might look at setting up a list of addresses that we could use to ship to. It is Girl Scout cookie season and I know one of our members sends cookies to troops all over. I've sent phone cards to combat areas through the USO so our soldiers could call home for the holidays. I'm sure there are hundreds of ideas out there....lets support our troops by sending them the things from home they miss and to let them them know that America supports them.

I've had some requests for the care package label template:

Hear is something that will never happen in another million years. My son is deployed in the U.S,.5th. Fleet area of responsibility aboard a LPD. We mailed him his usual "care package" on Dec. 31. We received an email from him today that he had gotten it already. The others we sent took about 3weeks each to reach him. Don't worry we know this was a real fluke.

i would just put them all in ziplock bags... its "cold" season over there right now, so its safe to send the sweets! :)  :)  Mine just loved the M and M's and other yummy goodies... :)

We're having our locals Elementary School make Valentines for our troops and we're going to box up some Venison Jerky and Bible Sticks for the guys too. Wondering if we can get away with packing some sweets for them too.

I don't know how you guys feel about this but I make alot of this and send out as gifts to friends and family. My son Trevor loves this recipe and asked me to send him some when he was on deployment last christmas. I soon after got several requests from him to send this along so I figured I would share with my fellow Navy Parents. this is a fast and easy thing to do.

10 MINUTE NEVER FAIL MICROWAVE PEANUT
BRITTLE
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. light corn syrup
1/2 c. raw or roasted peanuts or any nut of your choice
1 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda

Combine first 2 ingredients in 2-quart microwave mixing bowl. Microwave on HIGH for 4 minutes. Add butter stir. Microwave on HIGH 2 minutes 15 seconds. Brittle should not get too brown. Stir in vanilla and butter. Microwave on High for 1 minute 15 seconds. Add baking soda and stir until light and foamy.
Spread on buttered baking sheet for thin or into round cake pan for thicker Brittle. Cool. Break into pieces. My microwave is a 900 watt microwave. you can adjust the times for the wattage on your microwave. Shorter times for higher wattage longer times for lower wattage.

We're asking out local meat processors if they would like to donate jerky to send to the troops. Alot of them get venison donated and we think this would be a good use for it.

Beef Jerky is mentioned by ALL sailors I speak with...whether it was on my Tiger Cruise or simply talking about what they want from home, it is by far the number 1 item.

We've begun a ministry at our church. We have a large board with pictures all 43 guys and gals from our church that serve and at the beginning of November we put out red, white and blue bags with lists of suggestions as to what the congregation could donate. We also included information on Military Bible Sticks, which are MP3 players with the New Testament downloaded on them (great portable way to have the Bible with you - made specially for our troops serving in dangerous places) and we were able to collect enough to send out 35 huge boxes (couldn't send to the other 8 because we were unable to confirm addresses) and collected enough money to purchase 400 Bible Sticks. We are going to provide Care packages 3 x's a year to our troops. People want to support our troops, we just facilitate that desire.

Oh yea, the troops biggest request this year? Beef Jerky, Little Debbies and iTune cards.

Paul.. im with ya there! That cookie recipe makes me wanna go bake!!! :)

Also.. an FYI.. the post office was saying get our "boxes" out in November... well, I hesitated and prolonged going to the Post Office... but did send out 4 boxes to the boy... He received the boxes in 6 days (to the sand box) !!!!! I also put some cards in the mail that he got at the same time, and those took 12 days....... weird..... ;)
