Let's Have a Clearing House for Care Package Ideas and Addresses

Many of us send care packages to our sons and daughters scattered around the globe. Often we would like to do more....

I thought we might use this space to develop ideas of things to ship to our troops protecting our freedom. Also we might look at setting up a list of addresses that we could use to ship to. It is Girl Scout cookie season and I know one of our members sends cookies to troops all over. I've sent phone cards to combat areas through the USO so our soldiers could call home for the holidays. I'm sure there are hundreds of ideas out there....lets support our troops by sending them the things from home they miss and to let them them know that America supports them.

I've had some requests for the care package label template:

Assuming tinned cookies are still a good care package idea . . . in honor of our sailor who may not get his Christmas leave after all, here is THE BEST tinned cookie recipe ever:

AUNT JAN'S LOVING COOKIES
This is a large batch, but you could half it if you don't have cookie monsters in the immediate family. Probably 6-8 dozen depending on the size of cookies.

1 and 1/2 cups butter (3 sticks) warmed up to room temperature and I use an electric hand beater until fluffy.

add and beat together :
2 cups brown sugar (loose not packed) I have tried using molasses or honey, but they are more cakey.
1/2 cup sugar

add and beat in:
2 eggs
1/3 cup warm water
2 teaspoons real vanilla

mix together dry stuff and then hand stir in:
2 cups unbleached white flour ( whole wheat flour has good taste, but drier strange consistency.)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda

hand stir in:
6 cups quick cooking oats ( regular oats are good, but it is chewier)

I divide the dough into 3 bowls then add something different I have around to each bowl: suggestions I've liked
dried chopped cherries and 1/4 teaspoon of almond extract
chocolate chips
peanut butter chips
butterscotch chips
raisins
dates
coconut
chopped almonds (or your favorite nut) and a teaspoon of cinnamon

Chill dough completely (an hour or more). I have the best luck with using a pretty rounded teaspoon worth of dough slightly mashed down. Bake at 350 degrees and I check at about 8 minutes, sometimes patting the tops to release the air if they are too fat and letting them go another couple of minutes. I don't like them too crispy or doughy, so you will have to play with your time, altitude and oven.

LET COOL & DRY FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE PACKING IN TINS OR SHOEBOX BETWEEN LAYERS OF WAX PAPER. Have fun baking!

If the address is a FPO or APO address a declaration is required even if in a US port

this was the address when I was sending stuff to my daughter on the Lincoln:

XXXXX XXXXX
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)
Media/GM
FPO-AP, 96612-2872

teh ombudsman should be able to give you complete addresses: http://gw.ffc.navy.mil/FamilyServices/GWOmbudsman.htm

Dan, I'm still laughing with this vision of a $3,000,000 knife getting into your salsa!! I sent many bottles of a local picante sauce to both Eric and Kat during their deployments....Eric got so many people hooked on the stuff that he had to keep a stash of it locked up in his shop so he could have some!! It's the little things!!!

hey all....I just posted a short vid from the "Abe" showing how well stocked the ship's store is....point being that it is the little things from home that really make the care packages so special: http://www.navydads.com/video/care-package-needs-from-the

me to cora ;) - I too made homemade salsa and will be sending it over... per my son's request, along with applesauce... I got a small box that the jar's fit in, and then spray the inside of the box with that "foam"... seals them right up.. and the boy can use his handy dandy $3,000,000 knife that was issued to him and it pops right open! :) hehehe
