Let's Have a Clearing House for Care Package Ideas and Addresses

Many of us send care packages to our sons and daughters scattered around the globe. Often we would like to do more....

I thought we might use this space to develop ideas of things to ship to our troops protecting our freedom. Also we might look at setting up a list of addresses that we could use to ship to. It is Girl Scout cookie season and I know one of our members sends cookies to troops all over. I've sent phone cards to combat areas through the USO so our soldiers could call home for the holidays. I'm sure there are hundreds of ideas out there....lets support our troops by sending them the things from home they miss and to let them them know that America supports them.

I've had some requests for the care package label template:

If you went back to my pre-April posts (when Eric returned to the states) you'd see the most asked for care package item was Santa Cruz Chili and Spice Company picante sauce....I musta sent at least 20 bottles of the stuff when he was on cruise.....seems he got a bunch of folks in the shop hooked on the stuff and had to end up keeping it locked up 'cause everyone aways wanted it! That kind of stuff is a great idea to spice up otherwise bland grub.......

What about some cans of jalapenos or maybe even some green chiles-HOT? Now that would improve the flavor of an MRE...you know, for a Saturday night special! Hmmm, I guess they can open a can in the field...God bless them all!

A recent post from Charles about coffee got me thinking and I asked Kat about sending packages with biscotti and gourmet coffee.......this was her response:

I think every shop I've ever been to on a shoot has had a coffee maker. There's a joke that all a sailor needs to look like their in charge is a coffee mug and a bad attitude. Or something. I know everyone would love coffee and in my experience any type of flavored creamer (powdered for easy shipping) french vanilla is usually the most popular flavor. Any type of sweets go over well. That box of biscotti you sent me went like retarded fast. I don't know about other ships but we had pallates of girl scout cookies on the ship on deployment. But it would all be appreciated.

If you are close to a Costco, the biscotti they have are wonderful for shipping....you can break open the package and fit tons of individual biscotti into a package...get a couple of pounds of a GOOD ground coffee and some flavored creamer...bingo...you've got a care package for a dept on a carrier!!

Don’t forget that our NAVY personnel are not all on Ships. MANY are in country in Iraq and Afghanistan. My son ERIC is a Seabee and just recently got back from Afghanistan. There were times he went long periods without the ability to shower. The Afghanistan sand is like talcum powder and combined with the heat and wind plays heck with their eyes and the heat promotes chaffing and foot problems.(130 degree heat) Not all Seabees have family at home with the ablity to send CARE PACKAGES so remember to always send extra because everything gets shared. ALSO NOTE that when you send the USPS flat rate boxes to and APO there is a big discount.

Requested items:

Telephone Calling cards,

Foot Spray ,

Eye drops. I sent over several bottles of the Wal-Mart 1 oz EQUATE lubricant drops.

Pre moistened Towelettes

Deodorant,

Beef Jerky, ( send the large bulk size)

Undershirts / Socks ,

Pre-Sweetened flavor packets such as Wyler’s / Gatorade ,

Gum,

Dehydrated fruit chips.

They can always use an extra toothbrush and toothpaste. They use their old brushes to clean their weapons.

Gallon & Quart size Ziplock type storage baggies. The guys will share stuff and the storage bags helps keep it clean and away from crawly things.

Magazines, TATTOO, TRUCKS and CARS...Popular Mechanics, and all the girl's mags too!

Bottled water flavor envelopes. Any candy that wont' melt. Red Vines melt.

Jerky.

Granola Bars (which will get sticky.) Batteries. Postcards depicting local scenery from home. GUM, they love the gum.

If they have a canned favorite like no bean hormel chili and a can of rotel, or a particular soup. Ah Mamma's "home cookin" LOL

My Mom and I, and her sewing guild are making Christmas stockings. We will stuff them with snacks and candy. The elementary school kids are making Christmas cards to send with the stockings. We are sending one to each of the sailors in my son's sqaudron that will be deployed overseas at Christmas time. We just want to send them a little something from home at Christmas.

Louis- if you don't have an address you can
- do a net search as there a bunch of orgs that provide shipping info
- maybe contact USO or Red Cross
- find a ship, get to the ship's website and find an address...most port that and perhaps send to Moral office or chaplain
- contact a recruiter for above

just a few suggestions....for FPO addresses you'll need a customs declartion form for each listing contents

NNS090805-19. NAVFAC Southeast, Students Ship Care Packages to IAs

From Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast Public Affairs

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast packaged and shipped care packages to individual augmentees (IA) in Iraq and Afghanistan July 24.

Local students volunteered with the packing and shipping task. Students wrote notes of gratitude and appreciation and included them in each of the boxes.

"While we were putting the care packages together, we learned about the great things they [IAs] are doing for our country and how far away from their families they are now," said Katie Horan, a 5th grader from San Juan del Rio school in St. Johns County. "It made me feel good that we are sending them packages that will make them happy."

Donations of books, magazines, snacks and candy from NAVFAC Southeast employees filled the 13 boxes. Additionally, care packages were shipped to deployed family members of NAVFAC Southeast employees.

"Our people on IA share their time and skills, whether military or civilian, to help other countries in need," said Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Stoddard, NAVFAC Southeast IA coordinator. "Although they are far from home and away from their families, they provide unique expertise to ensure the mission is accomplished," said Stoddard, who shared stories from those on IA assignment with the volunteers.

Individual augmentees are Sailors and civilians who are fill individual billet requirements for various combatant commanders, DoD organizations, and other federal agencies around the world. These uniquely talented and dedicated individuals provide key and critical skills to the nation's security efforts. They are an important, relevant and indispensable part of the campaign.

Since 9/11, over 73,000 Sailors and civilians have served on IA tours in support of enduring conflicts. The Navy is making a difference in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa and the Philippines. As an IA, Sailors and civilians perform joint critical jobs throughout the world, serve as ambassadors for the Navy and gain invaluable joint coalition and interagency experience which will enrich their career.

"We [NAVFAC SE] stay in contact with the individuals on IA to provide them support and learn about what they are doing while deployed. We also keep them abreast of what is going on back home at their command," said Stoddard. "I can remember when I was on an IA and it was always nice to hear from your friends and family while you are deployed."

As long as NAVFAC Southeast has civilians, military and family members on IA or deployment, they will continue to support them with phone calls, e-mails and care packages. NAVFAC Southeast plans to send more care packages during the holiday season.
