Let's Have a Clearing House for Care Package Ideas and Addresses

Many of us send care packages to our sons and daughters scattered around the globe. Often we would like to do more....

I thought we might use this space to develop ideas of things to ship to our troops protecting our freedom. Also we might look at setting up a list of addresses that we could use to ship to. It is Girl Scout cookie season and I know one of our members sends cookies to troops all over. I've sent phone cards to combat areas through the USO so our soldiers could call home for the holidays. I'm sure there are hundreds of ideas out there....lets support our troops by sending them the things from home they miss and to let them them know that America supports them.

I've had some requests for the care package label template:

hey Ron....one thing....around the 2006 timeframe Walter Reed would no longer accept "general" care packages if not addressed to a specific soldier......make sure you know the current policy....with privacy issues they cannot release soldiers names I'm sure....

this is like carrying coals to Newcastle to say this to you Ron, but be sure to send calling cards.  Had a list someplace of stuff to send to the hospitals, but for the life of me I not sure where it went...I know there are lists on the web as I've seen them (Haven't had any coffee yet so the memory is a little groggy still...).  Have you looked at the USO.org sites and the various hospital sites?  If you have an email address for the PAO at the facilities it may be worth the time to ask them.

Yes Paul I can relate to that...:)  I have already been "collecting" items to put in the boxes..lol...I go to the store and see something..That would be great to go in there...lol....I keep coming up with more and more things to add..lol....I do have a question...does anyone have any ideas on what would be the best things to send to walter reed and the hospital in germany...??...what things they would need most..??...I am still researching this, but my first two packages are going there!

Yes Lauren, Hawaii is notorious for taking forever to get a package to! We've gotten things to Afghanistan in 10 days. Hawaii, usually at least a month (if we're lucky!)

Hi All...I have just started a new project within my group for sending out care packages to soldiers...I would like to start gathering some names of people and thought if any of you had any names to share, I would be glad to add them to my list.  I am going to send the first couple of groups off to the Hospitals at Walter Reed and Lundstahl...but would like to get other names to give the people choices of whom they would like to send to...I have about 10 people involved at this point and will probably get started sometime this month...I will share names within this group too as I get them :) Have a great day...this site has been most helpful...Bravo Zulu to the NavyDads.com Team!!!

Hi Lauren, There should probably be a group with that title. lol  I have to question my sanity for spending almost $100 to send potato chips to my son ANYWAY....

Welcome to doing it all wrong club. Haha and remember it seems every post office is different I can ship a box to my soldier a-Stan quicker than to my soldier in Hawaii

Well, I just got back from the Post Office.  I did everything completely the wrong way the first time so I could learn and comfirm all the advise received on this site.  I love reinventing the wheel...

Some have asked about how long the packages take to get to our sailors.  The Post Office said they fly the boxes to New York, which takes 3 days, then the boxes are put on a military transport.  After that its anyone's guess...

I am headed to the Post Office today to ship my goodies to the Eisenhower.  I'm expecting this to take some time, but I am SO excited about it. Momma and I shopped and packed and wrote notes all day yesterday.  When the packages arrive, I'll post the amount of time it took.  Can you tell we're newbees to this deployment deal??  Haha
