It has been 4 years since my daughter was at A school at NAS Pensacola. She wanted her car so I drove it down a month or two after she arrived in Pensacola. It's really tough to get around there, they have to get taxi's to go to the nice beaches which is expensive but they split it and go in groups. There are some shuttles to the local mall. They don't have much storage down there so she kept alot of stuff in her car. If you have a chance to visit try to book into the Navy Lodge at NAS Pensacola it's right on a white sand beach in the bay, but tough to get a reservation. Worth a shot. Her C school was at Corry Station, just down the road but not as good as NAS Pensacola, which has better amenities like sub shop, gas station, movie theater etc. She is CTT (CTT2 currently) and didn't have much technical background going in, but aced her entry tests and got this great rate. She loves being in the Navy, has an apt a couple blocks from the beach in So Cal.
Thanks for the reply, Bill.
That's great to hear that your son made it through, is loving his job and serving our country on that front. You should be proud. And from what we learned from an interview my son had for an internship at a local Cybersecurity firm last winter, he made a very wise decision.
But I'm more concerned right now about mine tripping over his own shoelaces and domino-ing his whole Division in Boot Camp than I am any "A" school classes. Ha! He spent half a day the last two years of high school in Network Admin & Cybersecurity class, has his certificates, and teams he that was on either outright won or placed very high nationwide in any related competitions in this arena.
Our family moved across the country two days after he graduated high school in late June. He had his last DEP meetings and shipped from a different location than where he started. So much of our life is still in limbo. If he makes it through Boot Camp the next step is "A" school in FL. What do I do with his car (title, registration, tags, etc.)? How much room will he have for his stuff there? It's these things that I need to figure out during the next two months. Maybe I should open a general discussion thread? Thanks again!
First of all congrats to you and your son. CTN is the place to be right now. My son is a CTN and loves his job. I just started out by search on Navy ratings and CTN. I got the unclassified info and that's about all you'll get from the internet and your son. I was a CTT and I don't know what he does, but basically think cybersecurity. "A" School is tough so he'll have to study, but he won't have any trouble getting a well paying job when he gets out.
Hello, all,
My son shipped to Boot Camp two days ago with a CTN rating, which, he chose specifically based on his existing knowledge and education. I may be getting ahead of myself a bit, but I have a few questions with regard to A school and couldn't help but notice a lot of the discussions are years old and may not get a response or notice. I guess I'm looking as to where to get started with CT questions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
This is a very relevant article to all aboard at Corry Station.

David- Here is a great page to like and checkout for more info on what CT*'s do for work https://www.facebook.com/navycryptologyandtechnology/?
Well you may get that opportunity. At least back when my daughter signed up, the 4 year CTT's not only get less training, they get assigned to bases. While the 6 year CTT's will get assigned to the fleet.
Thanks Phil, that would be awesome!
Hopefully you can see this picture, the guy on the left was my host for the Tiger Cruise, the gal on the right is my sailor at work. I forget what they call the device that she is working on, missed the caption to that picture... http://www.navydads.com/photo/uss-america-yearbook
If I am ranting I apologize, but want to share more info with you. Both of her granfathers were vets, but in my family my generation doesn't have any vets except for one of her uncles. We were basically clueless when she told us that she wants to join the US Navy, this was after 1 year at Univ of San Diego (one of 10 most beautiful campuses on this planet), and shocked. So I went on a crash course for several months (she signed up DEP so she could finish the semester). Luckily I have a friend from High School who made a career in the US Navy, and reached out to him for help on choosing a rate. His top choice came back as CT*, he said these jobs prepare sailors for really good private sector jobs. She did so well on the asvab test (straight A student her whole life) that she pretty much could pick any rate that was available, and decided in CTT + AEF. She has an apt a couple blocks from the beach. Even though they work 6 days a week now, she gets to jog and surf, she is really enjoying life in the US Navy. She already plans to re-up for 4 more years when the time comes. The LHA-6 hasn't been deployed yet, but on it's innaugural "USS America visits the Americas" she got to see a bunch of countries in Central and South America, they visited all of our allies. They will likely deploy to the Pacific fleet later this year.
