Navy Dads

Hello Everyone:

My Navy daughter anticipates moving to Norfolk in May of 2013. I was wondering if anybody knows any "Navy appropriate" areas of Norfolk that might be nice to purchase a small Condo in?

Thanks for your help.

Although there are a number of good areas for purchase in and around Norfolk, I'd suggest that your daughter move there first. My daughter was assigned to Norfolk in late May and has been on ship, in and out of port, so she is living onboard.

She's looking for Navy housing clopse to her ship or an apartment. She was lucky that one of her best friends was not only assigned to Norfolk, but on the same ship!!! But listening to the two "best friends," they are "fathoms" away from nominating the best areas they as women would feel comfortable to live in.

I suggest letting your daughter move in hang around the area for a while to get the feel for where she is comfortable. Realize that Virginia Beach is the next town over.

Having lived in L.A. for almost two decades before moving back east...a one hour commute each way is nothing, especially if I was going home to a place I loved. That said...I'd live across the bay Bridge in Hampton County.

But I'm used to country living...even when in on a ranch up a canyon in L.A.

Good Luck,

Chris

Hey Chris:

Thanks for your insight into the housing situation. My daughter is excited about the possibility of being stationed in Norfolk, a short 8 hour drive home. As you said it does make sense to get a good feel for the community before buying... (she is very anxious to start building some equity in real estate).

Thanks for your reply Chris I value your opinion and appreciate that you took the time to reply.

Hey, you never know, our girls might become shipmates!

Go Navy.

My daughter's ship (Abe) has announced that they will be homeported in Norfolk next year.

She's not considering buying a home in the area, but any ideas on what the rental market is like would be welcome.

All I know about Norfolk is a brief transit in 1983 when the harbor stretched for miles and miles and all of it Navy.  And what her grandfather said about when he was stationed there in the 1940's for a bit -- assume there are no longer any signs on bars and rentals -- the (in)famous  "No Sailors, no dogs"

Recent research indicates that traffic is really bad, even compared to LA or Seattle.

Finding a place to live within a reasonable commute to the shipyard where her ship will be doing major maintenance will be the main problem.

Any ideas or info from anyone?  There must be many who have kids stationed there,  it's the biggest Navy base in the world.

Thanks for any help
