My daughter was frocked yesterday to Petty Officer 3rd class.  She has been in the Navy including boot camp 1 yr and out of A school 8 months. I'm a very proud Dad!!

Hello, My daughter just passed her 1 year anniversary from entering Boot Camp.  She is a Damage Controlman (DC) on the Germantown, based in Sasebo Japan.  Mighty proud of her.  Jay has hit our experience right on. During boot camp, encouraging mail and pics from home are precious.  They really help with homesickness and to handle tough days.  Letter exchange will be kind of lopsided during bootcamp.  They have very limited time and honestly very little energy to write letters at the end of their days. No email, Facebook time as I remember.  Call privileges are allowed only when the entire squad performs well then only rarely.  When they are, the calls are very short.  2-3 mins, since there the whole squad has to get calls in on a few phones in 15 mins or so.  Cover the important stuff first.  I agree with Thom.  The Pass In Review (PIR) or graduation was incredible.  Get there early (1-2 hours) for a decent seat.  There was a very long line for us.  If they are going to A school at Great Lakes NS, try to plan to stay the whole weekend.  We made arrangements to leave on Sunday morning and she was available to visit all day Sunday.  Renting a car is worthwhile for local transportation.  The hotels have shuttles to the ceremonies, but local transportation in cabs after the ceremony runs $10 - 15 one way to pick them up from A school and the trip to the airport was $50 - $75 depending on the cab company.  Your "child" will be a very different person when you see them next.  Makes your heart feel like it will come out of your chest with pride.

David, they typically only have time on Sunday to write. A lot depends on if he has any letters written already. Don't wait on him, go ahead and send him letters. He can use all the encouragement he and the others can get. We were real lucky and got a phone call about the 3rd week. Amber had done something to earn the privilege.

Check the side and find "Calls for recruits" you can get free phone card time to send him.

Thanks Jay, and you were right on. Got the form letter yesterday. Any idea how long after I can expect a letter from him. Personal you know?

Congratulations to you and your new sailor. Let me suggest that if possible make every effort to go to Boot Camp Graduation. It is the Navy at its best.

Hello from Blackshear, Georgia. We saw our son off this afternoon to "Boot Camp". We just got the "I'm here safe call".
