Kevin, Got a letter from Matt Thurs. He said he is going to be a Gunners mate. I can't seem to find any links that describe what they do. Any help? thanks

No wonder he wanted to be an AME, they maintain the rocket motors on the ejection seats! Well, hopefully guns and missles are close enough!

Kevin, thanks. When Matt was in school they made rockets and launched them. He brought it home and launched it in the back yard. He loved that class. Maybe it was a sign of things to come. Maripat

Hi Maripat, thanks for joing the group. Was Matt gonna be an AME? They work on ejection seats for the aircraft. In some ratings color perception is critical, to prevent injury or damage while working on certain components that may be color coded. It's good that they found that out now, before all the training.

Most guys like shooting guns (and they will train on some small arms during boot camp) , do you think Matt would enjoy working with weapons? It sounds to me like the variety of weapons systems could make GM a real interesting rating.

If you haven't already, please take a look at the rating roadmap above and see the potential college credit for GMs. It's pretty significant after they promote to petty officer.

Hope this helps. Kevin

Our son Matt is in boot camp at GL. Got a letter today from him. When he first signed up in DEP he was going to be AEM. When he got to boot camp they told him because of his vision color perception he could not do that job and would have to choose another. His letter last night said they gave him the choice of cook or Gunners Mate. He said of course you know which I picked. Knowing Matt I knew it wasn't cook. He enclosed info on Gunner's Mate. I don't know much about the Navy or the jobs so any info would be greatly appeciated

Today Luke called and told me he's in an indoc class, then moves to ATT which I think is like the old BE/E (basic electricity and electronics), then the GM track.

Luke chatted online with his sister last night, and said he was starting school today. His class is scheduled for 152 days, so I think it's more than just GM training. More to follow...
