Well said, Rob.  And, I'm proud of your sailor, too!

Sorry to say I have not been on the site for a while but have a couple of personal thoughts/requests/observations.

1. Plese leave the music, I love it.

2. I am a retired police officer, (31 years in drug enforcement) when I went through the criminal law portion of my training they drummed into us "the intent of the law" which means simply why did the legislature pass the particular law, what were they trying to acomplish. With that in mind my observation is that in order to keep our ships, their mission and sailors safe we do not want the bad guys to know where our ships are going, what they are doing or what they are planning to do.

3. We all have to keep in mind that some things are just easy to find out by anyone simply by looking at Navy releases. A good example of this is promotion lists, my son was on deployment and I kept watching the promotion list and knew well before he did that he had been promoted to E4, anyone can access that site.  It is pretty easy for anyone to find out who is in the Navy.. Movement is the key. The Navy does not want bad guys to know where there ships are going or when. My sons ship was involved in rescuing a ship from pirates, I posted the News release and related newspaper articles on my facebook page because a) the Navy and NATO had already made press releases and b) I was proud of our Navy, my son and his ship. I gave nothing away because it had already been previously released.

4. Different sites have different ideas about OPSEC, follow their rules. Navy for Moms and my sons ships family readiness group are extremely strict. It is their site and their rules apply on their respective sites.

I told my son that after all the years I spent in drug enforcement I knew about "Need to Know" and that he should protect his ship, himself, his mission and his security clearance by not telling his mother or I anything that we should not know.

John, We're trying to liven this group up! lol

I hate I joined the group just to throw my two cents in this conversation. But, I think the best OPSEC rule which is not even posted in them, is good old common sense!

As for the music? I'm not familiar with it. It's a plug in that I added to the site for members to use. All I can do is delete it from the group. So if you guys want me to do that, I'll be happy to. Keep in mind, I'm loving the "Sweet Home Chicago" song and know I'll visit the group more often just to listen to it.

I hope you all had a great Easter!

Don't be sorry.  It's a great conversation, and I feel I've learned, too, after 4 1/2 years.  I usually go by what my sailor tells me (no sign yards after Seals got Osama, etc.)  He lets us know when there's high security.  Of course, this weekend the signs will be our for Easter celebration.

I will second the sweet home chicago!!!  Sorry again that I stirred this up, not intentional.

I can only speak for myself. I have never told a member on the site to not post names unless their Sailor had a Special Ops contract. I also hate this OPSEC discussion got stirred up again. It started with the mom on the NBC producers thread which was not called for. No one was giving specific details and it was not her place to come from the moms site to debate OPSEC violations on ours.

ALL I can say is!  I love this "Sweet Home Chicago" song.

No there was no specific concern.  I just remember a couple years or so ago when first on the site if a person used a last name it was mentioned to them that that is not a good idea.  I was simply following the same thoughts as before but I guess that no longer is an issue thus I stand corrected.

the only comment I have, and I promise I'll be quiet, is wondering if there was an issue that brought all this up?  If there was I'd be interested to learn more so we can communicate concerns to all our members!
