Oh good grief, I think I will shut up now. I didn't really mean to stir up this kind of hornets nest and ruffle some people feathers the wrong way.

Some of us have been involved for multiple years with the Navy and our sons and daughters. Most, if not all of us, are adults and at least I, live by the rules of my son's ship Family Readiness Group. I do not need to say where they are ever and I need to note that my son's ship has a facebook site that takes pictures (with pic identified as to where) and they place it on facebook. The ship also identifies sailors by rate and name as I have said. The name of the carrier group with escorting ships are identifed even as to where they are located in whatever sea/ocean they are in. I think that when good intelligent people need to be reminded on how to think, I just think that is bad, really bad. So, I guess that I will limit my comments on these sites and just use facebook where I can talk without any teaching moments. I do respect all who have started Navy Dads and will continue to peridically come back to check things out. I just wish that adults would be given credit for being adults. Oh, by the way, your second bullet point for Family Day Cruises, this was announced before and pictures were taken on that day with names and ranks and their family members.
I understand what you are saying, as I said, I just remember it being a no no. Also, I was just talking to my wife who is fairly active on Navy For Moms and it is in their rules that no last names are to be used. Again, I am not trying to stir up a controversy just being prudent.
I just remember when I first joined this site a few years ago we were told that it was not a good idea for OPSEC reasons to use last names. I was told this by a site administrator. Sorry if I offended anyone but I did not mean to.
John I like your comment about NS MAYPORT. It is a great place and have been there at least three times in the last year. We especially like Singleton's Seafood Shop in the village of Mayport. We always go to St. Augustine and have stayed at the Navy Lodge and at Jacksonville Beach. It is a great place for a young sailor.
My son's ship has a facebook site that is run by the ship with comments made by the Captain, etc. There are also pics of sailors with their full names and rate put on that facebook site. Family members can post on the ship's facebool site and their posts are identified by their full name and they usually reference their son. The facebookl site seems to visited much more with daily posts, etc., than this site. I surely would not do anything different than what is already been done on other approved sites.
We've all been told not to share our sailor's last names since bootcamp. There's a lot of weirdos out there and a lot of anti-Americans searching our boards. It's ok if you have a good connection with someone or have met...but otherwise my last name becomes "Kitchen"
I hate to be picky but for OPSEC reasons it is always a good idea to never use last names on discussion boards such as this. It is easy to change the names you use.
My son Ian has been in the Navy for a little over two years now and is assigned to the USS Vicksburg at NS Mayport. He completed A school at Great Lakes and subsequently went to C school so he was able to come home weekends for the first 8 months after boot camp. Ian is a Gas Systems Maintenance Fireman and will hopefully get promoted in the next few months. He works in the oil lab of the Vicksburg and has had to take numerous classes to be able to do that. I have been down to Mayport three times to visit him twice staying in the Navy Lodge and once getting as great seaside hotel at Jacksonville Beach. My wife and I really like it there and like to go to St. Augustine each time we go. We live about 25 miles southwest of Kankakee in a small town of Kempton. I am so proud of my son. ian just went on a 7 month deployment yesterday so we are a little anxious and am looking forward to his return of which we will be there.
