It has been a little over a year now since my son joined the Navy. Our second Christmas at home alone. After Boot Camp and A school at Great Lakes he was assigned to the USS De Wert out of Mayport Florida. They left Mayport in September and are on anti piracy detail in the Red Sea. My wife and I were there to see them off in September and plan on being there on their return this spring. He tested for E4 in September and was promoted to OS3. He is enjoying the duty and of course all the cool places they are visiting. Mayport is a great base we stayed for 10 days prior to the ship sailing and really enjoyed it. We actually stayed on Amelia Island which is a short drive, if you catch the ferry, and it is just beautiful. We have vacationed many times and in many areas in Florida always farther south but Amelia Island and the Jacksonville area is great.

Well, it's been a long year since my daughter joined the Navy and went through Boot Camp, but we have been fortunate enough to see her on four different occasions since she went through PIR in February.  After BC, she went to "A" School in Pensacola.  She was there from Feb. 22nd until about the 6th or 7th or June.  We spent a week in April visiting her in Pensacola which was great!.  She graduated at the top of her AT Class and was sent to San Diego for "C" School.  On the way to San Diego, she was able to spend two weeks at home in June where she was able to participate in the Fleet Week activities which included the local air show which was the Blue Angel's return to activity after their stand down.  She then had a week to report to San Diego as she was driving her own vehicle.  We plotted a route that kept her out of the mountains and where she only had to drive about 500 mile per day.  She made it with two days to spare.  We visited her over a long Labor Day Weekend and spent four great days doing many different things.  After graduating "C" School, she was assigned to a new helicopter squadron (HSM-78 Blue Hawks) where she is now a plank owner!  She has been TAD to HSM-41 for qualifications and should return to the Blue Hawks sometime around Feb. 1st.  She is now home on leave and will be returning to San Diego on Jan. 8th.  The hard part about the visits is saying good bye again (especially for her mother) but it is great to see how independant she has become in the short (and long) 12 months she has been in the Navy!  She really is enjoying her time in the Navy and has plans for OCS and perhaps a Law degree to go with her Masters in Criminal Justice.  Her ultimate goal is to be a JAG Officer!  Not bad for someone who started her post High School life wanting to be a High School Music Teacher!

HI ALL.  We have packing parties forming in Northern, Southwestern and possibly Central Illinois.  Molly's Adopt a Sailor is just finishing up our January adoption, and could use some more boxes for the USS Abe Lincoln.  Also, we have a HUGE group in February of over 1,000 of our finest men and women.  Check your February events for packing parties, sewing parties (yes, over 1,000 individualized pillowcases needed and LOTS of kids handmade cards.

My hubby is watching Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation.  It's just not as funny without our sailor joining in as they call out all the "great lines" in the movie.

Greetings Illinois Navy Dads! My son had his PIR on August 6th and what an awesome experience that was. He is still at Great Lakes for his ATT school and will be doing his A school there also. He will be an electronics technician. We are from Havana.

Hello All
My name is Rich and my son Eric is in bootcamp ship 10 dive 340. His pir date is 10/8/10. He will be going to florida for a school as AO. We live in Poplar grove just east of Rockford. I would like to tell you he is doing good but we have'nt heard anything from him except the form letter with his pir date. Anyhow I thought I might as well join this group because the only other one I am on is the bootcamp site and I'm not finding to many people there with sons on the same ship (just one).
Go Navy
Rich
