Navy Dads

We have anyone up north here? Hometown is Nappanee. My son graduates boot Nov 5. Then headed into the Seabees. Took almost 9 months of waiting to get in but he finally got to RTC. I am really proud of him and know it will be worth it. Prior Navy myself and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the invite, but a bit far for me right now, have a lot going on. Maybe someplace more central in the future.

Hi Steve, hows your son liking the Seabees? My son is to PIR Dec 3rd, then off to Gulfport. Does your son like it down south? Has he started his "A" school yet? Do you know how long "A" school is?
Hi John,
So far so good, he's just glad to be out of boot. He's at FT Leonard Wood, MO now for "A" school which lasts until March, then he goes down to Gulfport for a couple of weeks of combat training. After that he should be assigned to a unit somewhere. Says he has about 8 Navy guys in his class, the rest are Army and Air Force.
"He's just glad to be out of boot" I remember those days. It's good to know he's with other Navy guys, every day will be a new learning experience for him. Do you expect to see him during the holidays? I think they get a break from school during Christmas, I don't remember Thanksgiving 30 years ago. Does your son like the trade he chose, or is the excitement of being out on his own dominating his attention like it does for most young men? I hope they all excell at what they train for, it makes the time pass, and they have fun while they learn. My son was torn between two options he had to chose from, BU and CT. both good career choices I think. He went with BU, either to please me or because it includes combat training, or both.

He's been on his own, he's 26 so a little older than most. went into the Navy because he was laid off from work. He needed direction and I hope this enlistment will help. He is really looking forward to the experience. He was headed into the nuc field, passed all his tests but a little brush with the law about 5 years ago disqualified him. Right now he is thinking of continuing school while he is in working towards an engineering degree. He does plan on being home over the holidays. It will be good to see him again. First thing he did was buy a pc and we're setting up a Skype account for video which is really nice. We do that with our daughter in CA. Works great.
Being a few years older than most will/should be an advantage for him, especially when it comes to learning, training. He will likely be looked upon as a leader by the younger guys too. Not that being the leader role is an advantage but the more they mature, the easier it is to see the light at the end of the tunnel, so to say. I give him my best wishes - that he achieves his goals, in the Navy, and in life. I hope we all get that part right.

Amen to that....

Good to hear from you Dave, welcome back. My son got his SCWS while in Afghanistan. He is now back in the states at Gulfport. My son has thoughts about changing rates too, something in electronics. His rate in the Seabees is pretty well closed up.

Hello!

I am Michael and am new to Navy Dads.  I'm from Northern Indiana near Lake Michigan.  My son reported to Great Lakes on Oct 8th and is destined for submarines if all goes well.  Nice to see an Indiana group!
