Hi James,

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I'd suggest one of the two places on the base. You can contact the Navy Lodge by calling    1-800-628-9466 or by going to www.navylodge.com. You may stand a better chance if your son checks directly with them. They are right on the base and he can go in and check, or perhaps have a helpful Sr. Officer check for him. Your cost will be determined by your sons rank (as will the availability). You can also go to CFAYs website and they'll have information on there to help. Hope this helps!

Thanks Fishdad! very helpful. I do plan to visit as often as I can. In your opinion where is the best place to stay Yokosuka and how do I contact them?

Hi James. 

Yes, you can visit him. They have a Navy Lodge on the base, but getting a room there is somewhat difficult. There are several hotels right outside of the gate, but you're not guaranteed to find someone who speaks English. They have access to most American goodies at the Nex, but there will undoubtedly be things that he'll miss or things that just don't 'taste the same' as in the States. Yokosuka is a great place to visit. There's a lot to see and they offer quite a few tours that leave from the base. The housing put me in mind of a college dorm, with the exception that each room has it's own bathroom and small kitchenette. The base itself has a McDonalds,  Chili's, Starbucks, Taco Bell as well as a bowling alley, movie theater and quite a few other things to do. There are two malls nearby. One just a block from the base and the other a short drive away. You can get a cab on the base to take you places out in town and the train station is also within walking distance from the base. Kamakura is a neat place to visit, gives you a good taste of the Japanese culture. Everyone that I ran into was very friendly and wanted to be helpful. I hope you take the opportunity to go. I spent a month there  - because our son was very ill, but it was still a memorable trip for other reasons. You should absolutely go if you get the chance!

First I would like to thank everyone for the kind welcome!

Second I would like to know as much as I can about Yokosuka as my son the turbine tech is on his first deployment. I have read the command web site and have some idea bet am looking for more. If I want to visit him can I do that? What type of goodie boxes can I send? what does the housing look like from inside? what is the best time for a visit? Basically what is life like for a single young Sailor in 

Yokosuka.

BZ to your daughter!  I know how Proud of her you must be.  Your daughter will love Japan, our did and so did we.  different base but we traveled the country and it's so clean and friendly.  although alot has changed.  :(

 

update on my daughter;  She was moved to Crisis team, promoted to Divison Chief,(still JTCS)  made a trip home and got her drivers license on her first try and drove her new car back to DC on Memorial weekend!  That girl has guts!   Moving into a new place, I am going to miss her old one, right across from the Pentagon, What a View! and Security.  And then it's off to Ireland for her.  so many changes happening right now, it's hard to keep up with her.  I have now Officially seen her more in this past year then I had in the last 6!  One happy Mama, and it looks like she's staying at the Pentagon for at least 2 more years.  already have plans to see her 2 maybe 3 times yet this year!!!! (weddings and maybe a holiday).

Our son loved Sasebo when his ship was moved there during the earthquake/tsunami. He said it was a beautiful, tropical place. Visit if you get the chance. And congratulations on her JSC Medal! You must be proud!

"My daughter left for Sasebo Japan on 16 May.  She will be running the PT clinic.  Before leaving, she received the Joint Service Commendation Medal while stationed at Walter Reed.  We are so proud and miss her already!"
