no news is Good news, I'm sticking with that. last I heard from her, they were trying to find a "safe" port to fly her out of.....She is still "out" and needs to get back to Japan to close up her house, pack-out and report to D.C. by early June. sounds like I might not get to see her again this time! Oh but I will, LOL as soon as I KNOW she's in the states I'm booking my ticket!
Once your sailor gets a cell phone in Japan, Consider getting an "international" calling plan on your phone. For $3.99/mo (AT&T wireless) we pay $0.24 per minute. Without the plan the cost is $3.64 per minute. Most US wireless carriers have similar plans.
What's ironic is that one of the reasons he joined the Navy was to work and not have to go to school. How real life matures some young men and women.
My son is nearing the end of his 3 years assigned to the Shiloh in Yokosuka. He is returning to San Antonio to enter A school and be retrained as a hospital corpsman. While he is looking forward to being back in the states he has said he gladly accept another assignment to Japan. He loves it there, it was his initial experience of getting out of the "school" atmosphere and doing his job. We had the opportunity to spend ten days at Yokosuka with him. It is a very good place to live and work.
John,
His phone won't work in Japan. He'll have to get one there. There's a place out on Blue Street where he can get one at a reasonable price. They offer month to month contracts to the Sailors because of the nature of military life. The Voxer App itself is free. Works like a charm...also serves as an 'answering machine' so you can leave each other messages.
I think that he may be able to get a phone at the NEX, as well, but I may be wrong. They may only be able to make payments there. I'm sure someone could give him some direction.
Hope this helps!
Robin
Hi John, like Fishdad (Robin) our son is also forward deployed in Yokosuka and is also on Limited Duty. She basically explained it all! No doubt that your son will get adjusted quickly and find his place there. Skype is the main tool we use as well and ensures us that we keep in touch regularly. Our son is on a 5 year contract with the Navy and has been there for over 2. He loves Japan and life on the base. Welcome to the family and god bless you and yours.
thanks for the info he's an MA and all i know is that he's assigned to yokosuka as for voxer he and i have smart phones but will his work there with a state side number or will he have to get one there and thanks again
Hello John,
Most of us on here have a Sailor on a three year deployment to Japan. It's called being 'forward deployed'. Kind of hard to understand at first. It's a bit of an adjustment (for your son as well as yourself), but you will both get there. Encourage your son to get out and explore Japan and the time will go by so much more quickly. He'll have a sponsor awaiting him when he gets there and they will show him around and get him adjusted. If you'd like to keep in touch I'll be sure that my son connects with him and makes sure he's doing well. What is your sons rate and do you know where he's assigned? Our son is currently on Limited Duty and is working on the base, so he has alot of availability to help your son get adjusted.
As far as keeping in touch with your son, I'd recommend Skype. It's free and it's a wonderful way of keeping in touch. We also all have smart phones and we have the Voxer App on them. It's basically a free walkie talkie app which enables us to talk anytime of the night or day for free. Hope that helps.
There are plenty of us on here that will be more than happy to help you guys adjust. Don't be shy about asking questions. There's a wealth of knowledge available on here!
