Ya'll have a safe drive....think NavyDads might pop up once or twice in the conversation?

Theresa,

Ombudsmans are not always as responsive as we would want them to be. Your son should have a sponsor on the ship. That is an enlisted guy or gal that will sort of show him the ropes once he gets there. I would try to find out who that might be. Or maybe the Public Affairs officer? That was who responded to us when our son was deployed last year.

I think your son will enjoy Sasebo. My son was there for three months after the earthquake last year and he loved Sasebo.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Just wanted to send congrats to my son and all the sailors who were advanced yesterday. He passed with flying colors and is now Petty Officer ABF3. Pretty good for under two years of service!

The reason I was wondering is because on the ship's website there was an email connection for the ombudsman.  I sent an email, but never received a response.  Now I feel like an idiot as my son is not yet on the ship!  Maybe that is why I didn't get a response.  However, other parents I know receive ship news via the ombudsman.  Maybe the USS Denver doesn't do that.  Good to know your son is in Sasebo, too.

Hi Theresa, most ships do have an ombudsman. If you google the ship he is on and find the mil. site for the ship, it should have information about the ombudsman as well as some other information you might want to use. I just downloaded an app on my phone called Viber, hopefully when he gets back into port, we can try it out. :) If not Skype and a Japan pre paid cell phone for your son will work best. Some of the USO's also have phones that they can use to call home, but, I think access is somewhat limited. :) My son is stationed in Sasebo on the USS Germantown. :) Welcome.

Do all ships have an ombudsman?  I'm not sure my son's does.

Thanks for the warm welcome!  Yes, it does sound like the ship is in and out of port a lot then.  I thought a ship would go out six or more months and then come back in for the rest of the year!  Do all the ships go out together always?  My son did tell me the ship will be decommissioned in 2013.  He is excited that it will be hitting a lot of ports.  I'm not sure when we will be able to see him once he leaves, but I will definitely keep Sato Travel in mind then!  I will for sure be keeping in contact with this group through it all!

Hi, Welcome Larry and Theresa. My son is stationed in Sasebo, on the USS Germantown, which is in the Essex ARG group with the USS Denver. He has been there since May, and seems to like it so far, but he has not been in port much. They seem to be very active and underway ALOT. My son got there in May, Left in June got back in August, Left again in September...and is currently underway till December. Whew...what a whirlwind it seems. It's hard to adjust, but he seems to like Japan allot. I did finally purchase his ticket home for December 29....I got the best deal going thru Sato Travel European Vacations and paying in Euro's. Go figure.
