Sara,
Yes we've seen pictures of our sons berth. It makes me feel claustrophobic just looking at them! Our son in looking forward to a mattress too. He is on the USS Lassen. And I agree, I think the act of leaving ship is a mental change of pace for them that is much needed. I know that I wouldn't want to sleep where I work either.Hopefully ours boys will get rooms soon!

Fishdad - Jason is on the USS Shiloh.  He has a birth on the ship but if you've ever seen them you can't turn over without getting out first.  He's really looking forward to a mattress.  I believe he also needs the act of leaving the ship to go to his sleeping quarters just to have a change.  I think it's just like leaving work and going home for the evening.  We all need a little down time.

Hey there Fishdad, hope all is well with you and yours. It seems that the availability for bachelor's depends on your sailor's unit. Each group is allocated a certain amount of rooms and then once your sailor has his or her Blue Card, they are afforded space as they become available. My son is aboard the USS GW and he got his space when they returned from sea. The rooms are small, but spacious enough as long as the four of them get along, lol. Yeah the barge is smelly and their birthings are small, but it's "part of the life". I am sure that your son will get his place soon enough.

Sara, what ship is your son on? Our son has been in Yokosuka since October and is awaiting a room too. He's currently living on a barge which he says is cold and smelly. Poor guys. :)

We're in W. Pa and in our particular area we didn't receive the ice, just a lot of rain and now snow. Try to keep warm...an occupied!

The Bachelor quarters my son is in,  basically is a small 1-bedroom apartment with 4 of them sharing the one bedroom.  Still sounds like tight quarters with a lack of any privacy,  but I guess its better than being on the ship. It is truly amazing to see how fast my son has grown in the last year and a half since he joined the Navy,  as I'm sure you have or will notice the same.

Thanks for the welcome guys.  Trying to stay warm here in Ohio today.  The company I work for closed due to the ice so I'm trying to keep busy.  Hopefully it will have melted enough by morning to drive.  After two days inside I'm getting cabin fevor.  Can't imagain being on a ship for six months at sea.  No wonder Sailors go crazy when they come into port.

Hi Sara, great to have you with us here on the Japan group. Our sailor has been based out of Yokosuka, Japan for almost a year and after being out to sea for 6 months, earned his blue card and now shares bachelor's quarters as well. He loves the independence of having his own place to "escape" and has really flourished. We all worry about out children and try to find a common place to watch from afar as they grow and become a part of the Navy.

Hi Sara. Welcome to the Japan Group.  I remember how happy my son was when he too was able to move to the bachelor quarters. I don't think we ever stop worrying about our kids.

Hello Everyone, My Sailor has been in Japan since September.  Seems to be adjusting quite well.  Said he'll be glad to get his blue card and a bunk in the bachelor quarters.  He's my only child and I'm a single parent so I think this is harder on me than on him.  When we're young life's an adventrue but as we age we tend to worry more.  Boot camp was hell, but as with him, I'm adjusting too.  It really helps to have N4M's and N4D's to have someone to "talk" to.
