Well I have been a navy dad for almost 1.5 years and my son is stationed in Japan. I had a great day yesterday when my son walked into my work and surprised me he came home on leave with out telling me or my wife
Will be there 10 days, I know he will be on leave for at least 7 of those, most likely will be eating local. I will check out the books you recommended, and any other info you could give me would be greatly appreciated Patrick. Thank you
VIctor,
We've been twice to see our Sailor in Yokosuka, and are headed back this year. We've had a blast every time we've been.
1. How long are you staying?
2. Is your Sailor taking leave while you're there? If not, I believe they're restricted to overnighting within a 50mile radius of Yokosuka.
3. Are you wanting to cook some of your meals, or eat them all out?
Here's some books that I recommend:
Gaijin Guide Yokosuka
Japan by Rail
Fodor's Japan
I'd be happy to share our experiences if you have any questions or want more information.
Patrick
let me know how it goes Victor...the Theodore Roosevelt may be forward deployed there and son end up there in a couple of years
Has anyone been to visit their Sailor in Japan? I am planning a trip later this year (he is stationed in Yokosuka) and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of where to stay/things to see or do.
was able to speak to my son tonight. he bought a mobile phone in Japan and used an APP called Viber? anyone familiar with the APP?
Son just shipped out this morning for Japan. He is a Nuke. Look forward to talking and learning with you guys in the coming months.
Hello All from Dallas, Texas. My daughter at Dalhgren, got her orders for her first assignment in Yokosuka. I have a 1,000 questions having my baby girl so far away to WIFI, but I see that this blog has 170 pages so I will start reading and then get back to you all for your wisdom. I look forward to speaking with some of you and very much appreciate this resource.
Well, as life is dynamic, my son's advancement has "passed the grid" and he has been assigned to another part of the world. After a full and honorable period of serving on the USS George Washington in Japan, he is, as of this writing, in Norfolk, assigned to the USS Bataan. That is an especially special source of pride as we birthed James at home in Mesilla, New Mexico (on purpose). Our family has been in that area (Las Cruces, NM/El Paso, TX) since 1886. As background on a bit of history about Bataan:
About 80% of the American forces that fought the 3 month long battle in 1942 were ranchers, farmers and plain folk from New Mexico. They faced starvation when supplies were cut off, to the point of emaciation, but kept fighting alongside Filipino forces until the ordered surrender to save who was left. Those who were captured and forced march to the POW camp suffered great brutality until the survivors were rescued by McArthur 3 years later.
I grew up with the children and grandchildren of those at Bataan. James has the distinct honor in the history of the USS Bataan of being a true Son of the Rio Grande to serve on her. As he told me (in so many words), "Dad, I just want to help my Band of Brothers make it to their beach parties in whatever capacity I can". God bless them all!
you got it bud!!!!!
