Larry, Congrats to your son. My son picked Japan as well for his first deployment on the USS GW. When my son arrived last Dec09, the first few weeks were Indoc classes, where they learn everything they need to know about the base, living in Japan, etc.. He had to berth on the ship for the first month or two until he completed his basic qualifications on the ship, then he was assigned a room in the barracks. He seems to enjoy it.

Hello All
We just got news that James picked his fleet orders and got the ones he was hoping for. He grads C school the end of November then has 3 weeks of another school then 30 day leave then off to Japan. These are the orders he has wanted all along. We are very happy for him and look forward to his next adventures.

I also, have just recieved e-mail from Garrett, so all must be ok on the GW. He has his "boards" tomorrow night so hope it goes well. Most of the guys need to go two to three times to get through. Congrats to HS-14 as the only squadron eligible to fly the Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist Pennant on the GW since every eligible sailor has met the requirements!

Hey, has anyone who has a sailor on the USS GW know if the ship was a ffected by this typhoon that just hit in and around Thailand? Hearing that the weather out there is awful and that the entire area is under siege.

It's tough Dave because my wife and daughter were really hoping to take a family trip to see our son. I had planned on surprising him until this happened. Hopefully things will change in the future.

Same boat here Brandon. We planned on taking a vacation to Japan until my wife and I both had our employers go out of business. Now its emailing as often as we can and the occasional phone call.

This is our son's first full Xmas away as he left for Boot Camp prior to last year. It seems that it also has allot to do with vacation time earned and whether it is smart to use it all right away. I like the idea about webcam'in it up on Xmas eve and will suggest that to the Mrs! I was hoping to be able to go see him in November but losing my job took care of that.

Tell your kids to look here some of the best airfare deals from Japan. http://www.iace-usa.com/us/index.php They recently had a sale for $499 RT from Tokyo to several US cities. It really came out to $699 with the $200 fuel surcharge but still a good deal.

This will be his 2nd Xmas holiday in Japan away from home :(
The only bright side is he will be saving the $1,200+ it would have cost for airfare.
