Definately cheaper to just grab a phone over there. My daughter had Tmobile which was $2 a minute for international roaming in Japan. She ended up stopping at Softbank and had her service within an hour of landing in Japan. Plus she was able to get in on the free iphone deal from Softbank and $50USD a month for unlimited everything.

Same here, when my son is in Japan in port it is relatively cheap to speak to him on a regular basis. When they are elsewhere it is pot luck, usually very expensive etc. Once your son gets acclimated to his routine, you will start to hear from more consistently either by email, phone, Skype etc. It's a process that truthfully we never get used to but it works.

I speak with my son by SKYPE when he is able to. It would be alot cheaper when he gets over to Japan to get a phone over there. And put his cell phone on Military hold while he is in Japan. Another thing is get a Power of Attorney before he goes. He can go to any JAG office and get one. This way you can handle things here in the states for him. It is hard for them with the time difference. Also if he has a car or had a car. Get a non-ownership policy that way there is no break in coverage when they come back to the states. USAA has a policy that costs my son 5.00 for 6 months.

Peter - my son has also been assigned to the USS Lassen and I have the same questions. He will be leaving for Japan mid-October and will be working as a Sonar Technician. I have been curious about email contact and international phone plans. It would also be nice to communicate via Skype on occasion.

slight clarification: shellback when you cross the equator. When you cross the equator at the international dateline you become a "golden shellback". The ceritifcate you get when you become a shellback (which is signed by the way by Neptunus Rex) will list the longitude when latitude 00'00'' was crossed.
