To answer your question Richard a pollywog is a sailor that has not yet crossed the Interantional Dateline aboard a vessel. There is a traditional Naval ceremony when crossing the line that takes place aboard ship, your pollywog then becomes a "shellback" after this achievement. Check out the youtube video Mr. Brandon S. refers to in a previous blog.

Cora--sorry to hear that she is having a hard time. We have not heard from our sailor in quite some time and he too is not exactly thrilled with his job, but is fighting to make the best of it. Technology unfortunately works both ways as it trains us to expect more then just human nature. We write letters as well and I honestly believe that actually having something in their hand means more then just electronic gratification.

FYI -
Same issue on the USS Tortuga, email is down, and we do not know when it'll be back up....

Hey Mike, we have heard the same thing about the email aboard the GW. Seems they are having IT issues and that many sailor's in-boxes and email addresses were deleted. If anyone has sent something within the last week, it would be good to resend as a precaution.

Got a call from my son on the GW on Saturday, sounds like the ships email was down for a few days, but was back up again. He reports he too is now a shellback and is glad to have that overwith. He wouldn't provide too many details but did say there was lots of water involved.

That would be correct Cora. No more Pollywogs for us. If you YouTube "Navy Shellback", there are some really good videos of the right of passage. Looks kind of goofy but it's all part of it I suppose.

Congrats Brad,Gary. Sounds like wonderful things are happening for both of your sailors. My son is on the USS GW and there is nothing better then hearing from them with positive news. Best to you both!
