FYI...the GW is back in Japan. My son Garrett is back in Japan from his second tour, this time with the USS Cowpens. He is finishing packing as he has leave to come home Tuesday! Yahoo! We look forward to welcoming him home at Orlando Int'l Airport that night. We have him until Dec 11, so we will just have to have Christmas early! What a wonderful Thanksgiving we will have and we give thanks for all the blessings that have been provided to bring him home. All the best to your families and with the great thanksgiving thoughts for you and your sailors!

My son just flew into Japan and is stationed in Yokosuka. Does anyone have any idea of how the process works once he gets off the plane. He tried several times contating his sponsor but had no reply to his phone calls. His mother and I are concerned. I am trying to explain to her there is a process that he must be following once he arrives. Please advise if anyone can enlighten us for our own comfort.

Its what separates them from the rest.

I hope you're right, Ed! Kevin said they are keeping him very busy, but he was able to get 2 quals done the first week. He said he doesn't mind serving the officers their meals or taking tea to the XO, but he said he wasn't crazy about all the manual labor stuff like mopping the floor...he said he thought he left that behind in P'cola. :-)

My son is just about done with his cranking, he ended up shredding garbage in the "green room". He then gets to go back to his job. Every new sailor does it. The positive side is that he had a lot of time to do his "qual" studies and has advanced quite a bit.

Hey Cora! Just checking the site and saw your post about the ANNUALEX. Kevin's ship is participating in the exercise as well...unfortunately, they are playing to the role of a "non-compliant vessel" to be boarded and searched. Hope Brooklyn is doing well! I have a question for the group though...have any of your sailors been told they have to "crank" for 90 days? My son is an IT and is now working in the galley for the next 3 months. He is serving the officers, cleaning up, etc.... Can someone explain the logic in this to me or am I missing something? :-)

I agree, Mark! Kevin said he is really homesick right now. His laptop has almost completely fizzled out, so communication has been sporadic at best. He is on his was back to Sasebo after being in the Phillipines and South Korea. He said when he gets back, he is getting a new laptop and then saving every spare penny to come home on leave.

My son is in Sasebo and I got my first phone call in 4 months yesterday. He is planning on coming home on leave some time next summer. Yeah, it is gonna be expensive but it will be well worth it!
