David - sounds like your daughter is on the DEP (delayed entry program). My son was as well. I was glad he did it because it gave him time to mentally prepare for life in the military. He met weekly with his recruiter and got himself into good physical shape, which helped him meet the extreme physical demands of bootcamp.

David

MWD is military working dog. MSF is Mobile Security Force. Jim's son is MWD my son is MSF funny thing is they have become best of friends and are going to be overseas together. Your daughter does not even leave for basic until June 2011?

Thanks Jim, for replying so quick. Nest question-- what is MSF, MWD, and etc? By the way my sailor is Natalie, just one of my three girls. I can't believe her shipping date isn't untill June 6, 2011. What's up with that.

Shane - I know what you mean. I'm here at my computer trying to figure out where I can cut some spending so I can save for a trip to Europe. I hope I can figure it out somehow.

Jim, that is somewhat of the same thing Sean told me. I know that his mom and sister may try and catch up with him somewhere overseas as time permits. I would not mind going to Spain but I really don't picture that happening so I hope his Sister can Mom can go.

David - MA school is approx. 8 weeks. Then another 6-12 weeks after that depending on what their assigment is, such as MSF, MWD, etc. During MA school, right around week 5 I think, they usually find out what they'll be doing and where they'll be going.

Chris said to me: "Hey dad, I'm not sure if I'll come home for the two years I'm Bahrain. I think I'll travel around Europe instead." I think that is so great, and it's one of the reasons he wanted to join the Navy. I hope my wife and I can meet him somewhere in Europe next summer. Italy maybe.

Thanks for the great information, it's funny isn't it that when your 18 time flys and when your 48 time crawls. Sean thought that maybe he would be able to get some leave time in about a year but like you indicated who knows what kind of fun and games he will have to jump through to get some time off.

My son was not home for approximately 17 months when he left for his first duty station. He was able to get leave approximately 1 year later, then return 4 months later because first duty was completed. At first they were not going to give him leave even after a year, so he had to follow his chain of command. It was very difficult for me to schedule my time off from work but my supervisor worked with me. Actually he had told us that he would not be coming home and then we began to play phone tag. I was actually on vacation when he called and said that his leave had been approved, we were so relieved. I can't tell you how much we missed our son even though we had kept in touch through mail and telephone calls. Our son is home now and has been since December 2009 and we know sooner or later we will be going down that road again. A little hint now Christmas is 6 months away, if your going to send your sailor a x-mas package send early before Thanksgiving depending were they are stationed and use the USPS flat rate box. You would be surprised what you can place in box whatever size you get and if you send something new, insure the package. We usually insured the package for approx. $300.00, check the insurance rates at your local post office.
