Hi, Steven:
As I understand it, Riverines is not a rate in itself. It seems that different rates can join Riverines.
My son graduated boot camp on Feb 6 and went to MA school the next day. He graduated MA school in mid-April
About 2-3 weeks into MA school, the class got their orders. For his class, there were two openings for Riverines. (The class before him had no openings for Riverines.). He was top in his class at that point, so got his choice of the available orders, and he chose Riverines.
Top in his class meant best in Physical Training and one of the fastest times in the OC spray course.
Since he joined Riverines, his first stop after MA school was the Expeditionary Combat school in Gulfport, MS. That's a 26-day course. He tells me that there are sailors from many different rates at that school, some of which will be going to Riverines with him. He says he doesn't get the combat warfare badge right out of school, but it's the first step.
So it seems the advice is: be in top physical shape, be one of the top in your class, and you'll get your choice of orders. If Riverines comes up while he's in MA school, he can get it. If not out of MA school, it seems he can try for it later in his enlistment.
Hope that helps.
Dave
Thanks I will mention that to him. I appreciate your help.
My son will be going to boot camp soon. Once he is done he will train for MA in San Antonio. He has an interest in joining a Riverine team. Is this something he does prior to leaving for boot camp with his recruiter or is this something he has to wait for once he gets to his first duty station? I can't seem to find any answers for this anywhere.
Welcome Archie! Ask away if you have any questions....We MA Dads are all happy to help....
Way to go, Colin!!! Congratulations!
BZ to Colin!
Thanks everyone...it has been a tough stretch, but there are definitely better days ahead.
My mom was not able to travel but we showed her pictures.
Tough run Mike....Here's to better days!
HI, Michael. Sorry about all the troubles, although hopefully, Devin getting married is a good thing. Hopefully your mom got to see the wedding. Positive thoughts and energy to you!
HI David! I hope Colin finds his passion in RIVRON. We should always love what we do.
Kasea took her 2nd class test. She usually tests well, so I would expect her to do well. The only reason I could see her not advancing would be if there was a requirement that I'm not aware of. Who knows, things have changed. If her command was smart, they would start grooming her for leadership now. If she advances this testing, she'll make 1st class in 1 1/2 years. I'd hate to see them do to her what my ship did to me: "You're EW2 Nobody."
She's trying to find time to train for her cycling. It's hard when she's working 16-hour days. She just got a new MTB. She's so happy.
