That is fantastic! It is such a great feeling. BZ to your son!! It will be a little warmer in SA.
Congratulations David! ...and a big Bravo Zulu to your Son!
Just got a call from my son at RTC. Battle Stations is over, he's a sailor, and he graduates on Friday. Heading to San Antonio after that, so now the MA adventure awaits.
My son Ty had a similar experience in A school. His class only had overseas orders to choose from. So, he was supposed to go to Japan until he got chosen for MWD. Once he got a few weeks into dog school they gave him a choice of VA or CT. So, he has been at Subase New London for nearly 4 years. After a one year deployment to Honduras he re-enlisted this week for another 4 years and will be going somewhere overseas. The best advise to get into MWD is be in the top 5 of the A school class and in the interview they tell you to praise an object like a hat. "Praise the shit out of that hat" is what my son says! Good luck!
might not be related to the MA rating, but sure shows some MWDs in action
Hi Dave!
I'm with the other guys. Sarge's Meet & Greet is awesome.
My daughter is PRP in Silverdale, WA. PRP only has 2 locations available. She will be there for 3 years. She wants to go to a ship eventually, but you pretty much need to be MA1 or higher. She got Distiguished Grad and recently got promoted to MA3. The only bad part about Silverdale is she is on a Marine command and the schedule is really weird. 12-hour+ days, not the standard duty rotation that regular Navy commands have. Also, the Marines tend to be very LOUD, which drives her crazy. Granted, she went in at 27 (she's 28 now) and most of the Marines are around 19.
She loves the MA rating, though. She's currently on Harbor Patrol (hence the orange Mustang Suit in the previous pictures). She just got a week off, so she was able to actually spend time with her husband and do things they both enjoy.
Just like everyone else here, I have lots of stories... :-) When Kasea first made her decision to join, the one thing I told her was that even though she was joining during "peacetime" (relatively speaking), she could still wind up in combat. As long as she was ok with that, then I totally supported her decision. The other thing she keeps in mind is that although it's fun to shoot all the guns (she out-shot the Marines on the M240 machine gun), she may have to use them against a person. She figures (correctly) that if that happens, it is a matter of survival. But she does think about it.
Anyway... this is an exciting time for our kids and I wish them all the best. We just need to stand by them and support them any way we can, and love them, of course. Good luck to them all!!!
No matter what they choose as a specialty, They will get an assignment at a certain point during MA school. The assignment will be dependent on how well they do during school. My daughter got Italy. Once she found out that she qualified for dog school, they cancelled Italy. While in MWD school she was told that she would be going to Everett Washington.
I think that because it is a specialty you end going wherever they need you.
One other thing. Not every MA class has an option for MWD school. Sometimes they don't have any openings. Luck of the draw I guess.
So to answer your question, no, they don't find out until MA school
Dave, follow the sound advice of Tom L and Mike, also if your son does very well in A school and becomes an Distinguished Graduate of his class, he could be recommended for the Accelerated Advancement Program. Which means that he becomes a E4 (3rd Class Petty Officer) in a period of four months after A school.
