I just looked back at my daughter's graduation pictures. And we too pinned badges on the right side. Which according to Chapter 5 Section 5101 of the Naval Uniform Regulations is incorrect. In 5101.3 section j sub (3) it says "Correct Wear. Wear on the left side. ..." I also don't see anything in the Air Force Manual that would support this either.
My daughter tells me that they have continued to wear them on the right while on duty with the Air Force. So it seems to be the new way.
I assume that someone along the way chose to use the right side, (less gear on that side) and it has simply stuck. Or this may actually be new policy and the official regs haven't caught up yet? Either way, so long as someone in the command chain has authorized this method of wear, there is no problem until someone that outranks that person decides to go back to regs! And then it would just mean changing sides.
Good catch!
just got home from pinning my sons badge. I tell you it was a great honor. I do have an odd question....all the badges were pinned on the right side and I have seen in other vids and photos the badges are on the left under the ribbons....I am confused did our whole graduating class do it wrong?
My daughter went MWD and loves it! She just got her ceritfication.
Hi CR and Welcome,
Along with what Paul posted, here is something I cut and pasted from Scott, one of the dads here.
As to MA jobs...the day to day stuff is greatly varied and depends mostly upon the duty station. But I think what you are really asking is what specialties or C school are there for MA's?
The Navy lists the 'specialties' for MAs here. There are discussions about Expeditionary War Specialist, Personal Responsibility Program here in the forum. (And the PRP is more of a qualification program more than a specialty)
Everything else is more of a certificate or qualification program rather than a specialty. Harbor Patrol, Drug Detection, Crime Scene, Computer Investigation, and so on. The Navy COOL site shows many of the programs that convert directly to civilian certs, but there are many more. And what your son has the opportunity to do will always be based on the 'needs of the Navy' but will also be dependent on where he is stationed.
I hope this is helpful. I'm sorry that it is a bit vague, but MA isn't like any other rating in the Navy. Which is both freeing and frustrating! Unlike my Son-in-law who will be assigned to a specific weapon system, my daughter will learn what she needs to where ever she goes. Such is the life of an MA. Welcome to the family!!!
here is some very brief info about the rating:https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/ma.pdf
Hi All,
Must son was in the Rescue Swimmer program for the last year and was recently dropped. He chose the MA program as his next job. He is headed there next week. Can someone tell me about the program and the oppurtunities out there? Thanks
CR Dean
Military.com says that the Lackland Visitor's Center is open 24/7. I can't attest to that myself but that makes sense. My daughter thinks that it was open from 6a to 11p?
Regardless, I would HIGHLY recommend that you get your base pass the day before. Even if you have to get someone that is on call. The morning of graduation there WILL NOT be enough time for your soon to be MA to meet you at the Visitor's Center. (And you need to have your son to 'sponsor' you to get onto the base.) Once the class musters in the morning of graduation, their time is pretty solidly booked.
That said; your son might be able to arrange for an exception (put in a Special Request Chit) to go meet you either before muster or between muster and when graduation is supposed to happen. But it would be an exception!
But unlike PIR, there aren't a lot of families that can travel to MA graduation so the command does try to make accomadations for family members. My daughter's graduation the ceremony was postponed by nearly an hour as we waited for a parent to arrive.
But again, and I can't say this strongly enough, what I have just said is an exception. If there is ANY way that you get your pass the day before, that is your best plan.
I am going to fly in for the graduation at the end of this month and my flight is scheduled to get in the day before but at 6:30 Pm
Is this going to give me enough time to get my base pass? will the visitors center be closed. Or will I be able to get it in the morning before graduation.
