Chris%20and%20CRG2%20teammate%20Jordyn%20Apsey%20at%20the%202013%20...
Merry Christmas to my son Chris and his CRG2 mates in Bahrain, Christmas 2013!
Hey Shaun, welcome to the group. Congrats on your son starting at MA school. It can be a intensive school. My daughter graduated MA school 7Dec12 and is now stationed in Spain. Some of the duties of MA is just like being a cop back home. Amber loves it.
Tell your son to study hard and get top grades. The higher academic the ranking the better chance of getting duty station he wants. Amber finished number to and had 2nd pick of orders./ OC day will be rough but if my daughter can handle it so can your son. I can also brag on my daughter as she was one of only six in her class to qualify expert with the pistol. I'm a proud father as I am sure you are. I met other fathers on here with kids in amber's class. we managed to get a little friendly competition going between our kids. Once again welcome to the best group on Navy Dads.
Awesome! That is a special treat indeed!
We will be happy to help with any questions he may have!
Thank you all.... we just got off the phone with our son and he will be coming home for Christmas!!!!!!!!!. I will be sure to show him this site and let him read all this information...
My son is an MA2 stationed in Bahrain for a year. He's a team member of RivRon2, and just finished a deployment on the USNS Cesar Chavez recently. He did his ECS down in Gulfport back in April. He enjoyed the training, and enjoys the deployment. It would be a good and challenging selection for your MA, Shaun.
Shaun...Congrats and welcome. My daughter is an MA3 on a Rivron team. This is the Expeditionary Security faction that Michael mentioned. After A School, she headed off to Expeditionary Combat School for advanced weapons training, land navigation, advanced combat trauma training, etc. This was followed by SRFA school where she learned to lead assault teams in certain situations. MSRON and the Riverines have merged since August. She will soon be off to Riverine training. They guard high-value targets all over the world....ships, people, platforms... It is more offensively based and the training is demanding. Your Son will have choices based upon the needs of the Navy and his performance at A School. There are broad opportunities within the MA rating. As he advances, we can all guide you. Oh...and tell him to beware of OC day...LOL! Best of luck to him!
Shaun, First of all welcome to the group and Congratualtions to you and your son on graduating from Boot Camp. My son is a MA3 (third class petty officer) on the carrier USS George H.W. Bush in Norfolk, VA. Yes, PIR was awsome. Are you gonna go to his graduation from "A" school in San Antonio? It's not as big a deal as PIR was but i went and I'm glad I did. It's very small and less formal but still impressive. You get to pin their MA Badge on them for the first time. San Antonio is a nice place to visit too. I stayed in the Riverwalk area and we walked around it together, had dinner and went to the Alamo. They probably will ship your son out the next morning and don't give you any information until you get there so don't plan to much to do. I wouldn't have missed it for anything though. Good luck to your son. Tell him to study hard becasue the better he does the better his chances will be for picking where he wants to be statiioned at and what he wants to do as an MA. There usually as only a few MWD (working dof) positions available and they go quick. My son cane home for two weeks before reporting to Norfolk. He loves it and at least we can communiate by email now. He will be going on Deployment for 10 months in February so that's gonna be tuff. Keep us posted on your sons progess and any news. Hooyah Navy!
PS: If you have the chance to go to your son's MA school graduation, I highly recommend it! I know that it happens relatively close to PIR but if you can swing it, I think it is worth it!
The discussion on MA A School is a good place to start. And if you can go to his Graduation, I hope my tips for graduation would be helpful to you.
First of all; CONGRATS!!! I hope that you enjoyed the time with your son at his PIR.
As to MA jobs...the day to day stuff is greatly varied and depends mostly upon the duty station. But I think what you are really asking is what specialties or C school are there for MA's?
The Navy lists the 'specialties' for MAs here. There are discussions about Expeditionary War Specialist, Personal Responsibility Program here in the forum. (And the PRP is more of a qualification program more than a specialty)
Everything else is more of a certificate or qualification program rather than a specialty. Harbor Patrol, Drug Detection, Crime Scene, Computer Investigation, and so on. The Navy COOL site shows many of the programs that convert directly to civilian certs, but there are many more. And what your son has the opportunity to do will always be based on the 'needs of the Navy' but will also be dependent on where he is stationed.
I hope this is helpful. I'm sorry that it is a bit vague, but MA isn't like any other rating in the Navy. Which is both freeing and frustrating! Unlike my Son-in-law who will be assigned to a specific weapon system, my daughter will learn what she needs to where ever she goes. Such is the life of an MA. Welcome to the family!!!
