Port Hueneme - Malibu to the south, Ventura and Santa Barbara to the north. Definitely could be worse... :~)

Our son Chris was home on leave for a couple of weeks. It had been over a year since we saw him. It was a great visit. He's back in Bahrain now for another year.

Scott, Port Hueneme is a SeaBee base in a nice section of California I think your son will like it there. They do fly Seabees to San Nicholas Island on a DC-3 from port Hueneme about 60 miles off the coast.I visted my cousin stationed there that I when through bootcamp with. MWD is a good job I myself would have like to working with dog's. I was a Electrician Mate and made E-5 in 2yrs 3ms some rating are hard to make rank in some are easy. My nephew (E-7) that just got out with 24 yrs in the Navy 2010, He's last few years he was a Navy career counselor. When I told him my son was going to in the Navy to become a MAA his advice was not to pick the MWD because it's harder to move up in rank.

The Midway video on the main page is fantastic.  Thanks, Kyle!

Scott - my son (Chris) is home on leave.  I'll let him give you some tips first hand...

=======

Sir, the biggest tip I can give about the MWD selection process is to show an extreme confidence. The instructors that will be interviewing your son will want to see a candidate that stands out among the others. Your son will have to praise the ever-loving hell out of an inanimate object as it was his dog. Do it loud and proud because it shows that he does not have any reservation. The instructors want intelligent and confident people in our program because you have to be to do this job. And they will be able to tell if someone really WANTS to be a handler versus someone just not wanting to be a regular MA. I wish your son the best of luck. This is the GREATEST field in the Navy.  MASN Christopher Santucci

If you havent watched the Midway video on the main page please do so.Many of our dads grandads and uncles were over there and if you heard stories as a kid like I did it brings back memories.

Jim,

Great video and what a blessing for your wife. My wife and I know how she feels when given the oppurtunity to see your boy. Its funny ,after she saw Chris noth else really mattered. We just returned from a visit to see our MA stationed in California , what a blessing it was. Congrats on everything!

Hey everyone: My wife, Sharon, is a high school science teacher.  The senior class dedicated their yearbook to her this year.  However, the BIG surprise was when our son (Chris, currently a dog handler serving in Bahrain), showed up unannounced.  Priceless...

You can fast forward the video to around 3:45.
