So Chris is in Day 3 of his duty station at Norfolk.  He told us over the weekend he felt more homesick here than he did during RTC and A School, but he's adjusting.  I'm driving his Charrrrrrrger down to him on Friday, so he'll be able to tool around town and not feel locked on the base.  He says you need a car to get around.

Chris was initially offered a shot at PRP, but he was DQ'd because his knee was troubling him during qualifications.  But he seemed to think that it would be looooong watch shifts, and may not have been as engaging for him.  It sounded like static duty to me too.  One of his mates took the assignment in Washington State, and he seemed to acknowledge that it would be long and torturously dull, but then, you are granted a higher security level, so perhaps we civilians won't ever know the full extent of the work involved.

I know there was discussion about PRP when the last class started.  However, my son is considering it.  He signed an MA contract to be a cop and PRP sounds like static security work that could be very boring.  Anyone agree or disagree?  I would like to be able to discuss this with him intelligently before he decides.  Thanks in advance

Hey Red, I stayed at the Care Free Inn, on Valley Hi Road.  It's right outside the Lackland gate, and it was a twenty to thirty minute walk to Carter Hall, where the ceremony was held.  It was amazingly convenient, but I went on the cheap, and while the place was nice enough, I had no illusions of it not being borderline fleabag.  It was me and my son's friend, so we were not looking for anything other than a bed and head for the two nights we were there.  There were plenty of other families there, so it was pretty filled, although they didn't have to hang the  NO VACANCY sign.  I plan on visiting San Antonio again, but I would go all out and book a classy joint on the Riverwalk which was stupendous, and worth at least an afternoon's stroll.  There are also lots of other motel chains along Interstate 410 or State 90 to check out, all within a fifteen minute drive of the base. Side note re: the Riverwalk - my son's rack/roommate for Boot Camp and A School proposed to his girlfriend there about a week before they graduated, and it was an awesome moment, recorded and posted to Facebook.  The place can do that to you!

We are going to San Antonio in May for my son's graduation.  Can anyone recommend a hotel?  Hi Ray......

Chris is home for two weeks, until April 1st, then he reports to Naval Station Norfolk.

The trip was great. And the ceremony was neat.  Family gathered outside the auditorium, and right before the start, the sailors come outside and meet you, conversing and hanging out.  Then the call to line up, families proceed inside, a video of the MA school experience is played, and finally the new MAs enter.  Very simple, very moving and profound.

And make plans to enjoy the city.  San Antone is a great town!
