For Ray, my son has been stationed at Norfolk for the past year. He is on gate and patrol car both. He is volunteering some time with K9 to help with points towards advancement and his evals. He did not volunteer for waterside and his roomate did. My son got the best deal and his roomate hates waterside. They also sit on the end of the piers watching the water go by. ALONE. Let me know if you need anything, I truthfully have not visited this site sinces he got his orders from SA. Hopefully I can answer some questions and help some of the members out here.

New York Harbor is soooo much busier than people may expect, and they all pilot like they're Jersey Drivers...sorry about that wildly unfair characterization for a joke!

Ray, I used to have a boat years ago on the Hudson. I had a crazy experience on my first trip to the city, we docked for the weekend up in Nyack. Went to the Statue of Libery, then turn towards the East Ridver and Ii thought every boat in the USA was coming at me, the my wife yelled at me look behind us .... and here comes a Staten Island Ferry . I got the hell out of there ASAP. I had only had the boat about a month. A trip i'll never forget.

I'm not sure what Chris thinks about water patrol duty, although I personally think I would have dug it. But it's different than taking a speedboat ride with buddies at three o'clock in the morning, and cutting the engines under the Tri-Borough Bridge (now known as the Robert F. Kennedy)...I would guess...

Ray, my son was offered PRP and it didn't take him long to realize he wish he had declined. He got to come to the area which we thoroughly am glad but he now wishes he had done something different. Looks like he might get sponsored by a ranking officer for OCS. As an MAA, he really didn't like the water patrol and the long hours, especially from 4:30PM to 6:30AM.

True, El.  Chris told me he was offered the PRP in his indoc at A School.  He thought about it until it was revealed - reluctantly, it seems - that the MAs in the program get clearance to guard nuclear weapons facilities.  Never Again Volunteer Yourself!

Ray, Most MA can tell you what their duties details are. When at "A" school they ask my son to join the MSF they wouldn't tell him till he elected to join that group that it does. It's safer for them for us not to know about their duties : )

My son Chris was just asking me about the specific duties of MAs at Norfolk.  Any information would be appreciated!

Thanks Bill.  I'm fighting the urge to sell everything up here: home, small bookstore, and just get a place down there.  Two things stop me. One, my daughter is just starting high school up here, and for Two: it's his life now, and I raised him to fly on his own.  I hope you get some time with your son in Pearl Harbor, it's one of the most beautiful and spiritual places on earth.

Terry, he was able to stay overnight?  THAT would be sweet, although he would have to crash in the queen size with his buddy who is coming down...or he might make his pal sleep in the tub!
