just a quick ditto to what Shane had to say on 2/21. We also thought of staying on base in LAFB but glad we didn't. We stayed at a real nice hotel just outside of SA and loved it. Although we had to drive 6-7 miles to get to the base, our son met us there and we got a pass to go wherever we pretty much wanted. The icing on the cake was that our son was allowed to leave the base and stay with us at the resort/hotel. It was great.

I'm thrilled with the choice, and I never tried to sway him one way or the other.  I think being really close with his grandparents may have had some influence, but he's an east coast kid at heart.

I also checked the pubic golf there, and the plenty of nice looking courses for AMAAAZINGLY good green fees.  I'm used to NYC muni's like Van Cortlandt, which are eh, in so so condition by the end of June, for about 40-45 bucks around.  For that price, there are courses with OCEAN VIEWS, not Major Deegan Expressway traffic noise!

Is that wrong of me?

Ray, glad to hear Chris made that decision.  It will certainly be more convenient for visiting.  I'm hoping for the same in a couple of months.

Just found out my son Chris is headed for NavSta Norfolk after his MA training is done. That's the duty station selection he chose. He graduates from A School on March 18th.

Joe, is your son going over to be in MSF? The only thing I can say is at least so far Sean really has not spent a lot of time in Bahrain he is out on mission quite a bit and since I have not heard from him in a couple of weeks now I don't know if he is there or not.  Doesn't your son have to go for additional training in MS and San Diago before he actually leaves for Bahrain?

My son just graduated last week from A school. We also encouraged him to go to Bahrain since he joined the Navy to see the world. I must admit that him actually leaving for Bahrain this evening has been difficult to take in. Shane, I am glad to hear that your son loves Bahrain because I have gotten the same feedback from others. We went to San Antonio to try and spend some time with him last Monday and saw him for the first time at the graduation on Friday and a couple of hours afterward before we had to fly back home.

Thanks for the wisdom Shane!  I'm glad I booked the Care Free Inn right outside one of the gates.  My son had told me too that there was a place or two right on the base, but I don't like loose ends!  Sheesh, if I have to walk a 1/4 to a 1/2 mile for a bus, I'd just keep on walking to my destination.  I'm used to NYC ,where there's a bus stop every two blocks...which can make for some fitful stop and start commutes.

Whatever choice my son makes, we'll support him, CONUS or overseas.  It's his life, and he was always headstrong and his own man from birth, when the maternity ward nurses called him "Your Highness"...

Hey guys, I have been following your posts for awhile. My son graduated MA School about this time last year. When we went to see him graduate we were going to stay on base at the Gateway, My son was told that there was plenty of room etc so when we got there of course it was full, they ended up putting us up in a secondary type of hotel/housing on base it was over at the Center for South American Studies area (training that the Air Force does for south american countries).  If I had to do it all again would have stayed off base as it was quite the mess,  Lackland is a huge base and you have to take a bus everywhere and where they put us up you actually had to walk 1/4-1/2 mile to find a bus stop. Also we wanted our son to be based in the US but he wanted to travel and has ended up in Bahrain and loves it, one of the main reasons he joined was to see the world and he sure is getting his chance to do that.

I think most parents want their sailors to stay reasonably close, but I also think the chance to travel is very enticing.  It would have been, to a 20 year old Ray!

I'm just discussing it with him, and not trying to provide undue pressure one way or the other.  Of course, San Diego and Virginia have some good golfing, and that wouldn't upset me!  But my wife also has family in Spain, and we are planning a 25th anniversary trip in 2012, so THAT is also intriguing, as far as an Italian posting.  Decisions, decisions...

As I understand it from my convo with Chris, the choices presented to each class are selected top down, based on performance in their 'A' School class.  That's why it's important to perform well on all tests and qualifications.  I don't know how often MWD Handler spots come up either.
