Other than having a lab of our own Ty doesnt have any professional dog experience.  Hopefully the fact that he has 2 years of college as well as 1.5 years working for the Sheriff's Dept. here will help get him a spot.

Shoveling shit is a highly underrated skill!  We had a dog for the first 16 years of Chris' life, and he has also done some dog walking jobs.  Dunno how that will play out for him.  Chris' great grandmother was Calabrese.  If you look at Italy as a foot kicking a football, my grandma Dora was from the ball of the foot, very near to Sicilia.  That might be an interesting option for him.  Something to ponder.

Will do Jeff re: Chris' choice. As to the MWD Handler spots, this class has one in San Diego and one in Italy, though I still don't know which city/base it is.

That's part of what I am telling him, and as an honor grad from RTC he is already on the radar a bit.  He says he doesn't really care where he deploys since he had really wanted to go to Bahrain.  He has until Wednesday to choose.  And while I do like the idea of visiting him in the San Diego area, I still feel an East Coast bias.

He also told me one of the MWD Handler posts is in Italy.  Is that Naples?  I looked up NavStas on Google, and it showed a couple, including Naples, but also one on Sicily, which any Italian (as myself) will tell anyone who might be listening is not Italy!

Bill, thanks for the tip on traffic.  We're gonna take a shuttle from the hotel to avoid the line from what I hear.  Ty is hoping for a MWD spot but is aware of how competitive that is.  Are most of those overseas deployments?  Ray, I wrote Ty this morning and included the info you got from Chris regarding deployment options.  Keep us updated on which one he gets.

Strike that, my friends' son, Joseph Riccadonna, is graduating the 11th.

Virginia is my personal choice too, for that reason!  I also know a family whose son is graduating PIR on the 18th; the step dad was our first officer returning from GL last month.  They were original NYC kids, and now live in Miami.  We hit it off.  I should double check the kid's last name, his first name is Joey, and he's also going to San Antonio for MA A school.

Chris' opinion of Virginia: too close to the top ranking officers, they'll be STRICT on regulations.  I wanted to ask: for you to break, or for you to enforce?...I shall get my dad to talk to him, see what his Navy vet perspective.

Wow, thanks for the info guys.  Really helps with the planning.  I think I will check out the Gateway Inn too.  I was going to book at the fairfield near sea world for $75 a night.  Great idea inviting his friends to come along.  I've told Ty in letters to give me names of shipmates in bootcamp that aren't getting mail and I would send them encouraging notes but so far he hasn't.  Funny thing is Ray will be at Chris's MA grad the same day I will be at Ty's PIR.  Ray, my suggestion would be Virginia.  Very selfish reason of being close enough to drive there to visit!  Thanks again for all the info.

We have a family friend who lives in San Diego, whose past life as a Navy wife landed her there after growing up in New York.  I don't know where her husband is these days, but she's still there.  And I could play golf at Torrey Pines on my visits...

So I just talked to my son Chris, and he told me about his list of deployment options for his class.  He was not enamored of the list, but here is what he told me were the options:

Guam, Coronado, San Diego, Washington state, a couple of choices in Virginia, New Hampshire, and a couple of MWD options, but I didn't catch where those deployments were.  He really wanted Bahrain, so he was disappointed about that.  I on the other hand was not disappointed.  He won't get first choice, but he still will be one of the first few.  Any thoughts about these choices?  They're three year duty stations.
