I emailed the Gateway Inn folks, and they informed me that I can call/email them three days before my arrival to see if there are any rooms available at that time.  And the prices are only in the 35 to 60 dollar a night range.  So I'm mildly hopeful, and I wouldn't mind taking a hit on the package, since the entire thing, airfare, room and car rental cost 360 before taxes and fees.  I could swallow that to be closer to Chris.  But it's not going to crush me, I have been to one or two 'hot sheets' establishments in my time...

Bill, you're the man!  the package I booked the other day for my visit has me in the Care Free Inn, which looks fleabag but is just outside the gates.  I may try to switch it out to the Gateway, if Priceline allows me, although I'm still close enough to walk on to attend his graduation - I figured there would be Air Force graduation crowds, which is why I opted for one of the closest inns.  I will definitely have time to do a lot of San Antone sightseeing, since I'm landing Thursday at 11 am, and not flying out until 5 pm on Saturday.  Apparently my son Chris has made a few good acquaintances at the nearby Hooters, which makes my dad so proud - a chip off the old shit on a shingle!

Where is the graduation for the Master at Arms seaman, in relation to their barracks, and the Carefree Inn?  It's located on Truemper, which is also the street address for Chris' barracks.

The restrictions seem to loosen as the stages pass.  I think they do get weekend liberty the second week, after they pass the indoctrination.  Bill and El, who are also in this thread, may have more knowledge and advice on this.

My son doesn't play he was into wrestling and skateboards, but I was also contemplating getting in some golf when I go down for his graduation from MA 'A' School on March 18th.  Not only does the base have golf, but San Antonio has Brackenridge and La Cantera practically in the city itself.  As a kid from NYC, we get our muni golf in the outer boroughs.  I'm flying down on the 17th, ETA 11 am, and since he has to probably train/work until 4, sounds like my son's dad will need some entertaining of self to do...El, Bill, do you know if Jeff will be able to get on base during his son's after training liberty during the week?

Thanks Ray, just trying to plan a trip down there to play some golf with him.  I see there are two courses at Lackland.  What is the possibility of me getting on the base if he hasn't qualified for off base liberty yet?

My son was a grad n go last January 21st, and he was down at Lackland for a week before his classwork began.  There is a link here at NavyDads which explains the levels of liberty A School progresses, but Chris seemed to be visiting the sights on his second weekend there.  That's my son's experience so far.  He graduates on the 18th.

My son is scheduled for PIR March 18 and is grad and go for A school in San Antonio.  I have two questions.  First, how long does it normally take to class up once he arrives.  Second, how soon do they get weekend liberty there?

Chris and I spoke last night, and he said he's not top of the class, but doing really well. He said he will still get pretty good choices.  We talked about Bahrain, and they've seen news about it too.  He was also asking about Korea and the roller coaster tensions there.

He told me he will be choosing this weekend. between 17 and 22 February, so it's almost psychic that I was asking yesterday.

Thanks El, I will pass along your thanks and best wishes.  Thanks too Bill

Wow can you believe what going on in Bahrain, I hope they don't drag our boy in it to police it. Ray tell your son to study hard and do the best can the top people in the class get to pick their orders that available first. So if he does well on test he changes to get the orders he want will be better. Tell Chris this old Navy veteran said THANKS for serving our country and I hope he get the duty he want : )  Cheers
