MCPON (AW/NAC) Mike D. Stevens

The Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy

(MCPON, pronounced "mic-pon") is a unique non-commissioned rank in the United States Navy. The holder of this rank and post is the most senior enlisted member of the U.S. Navy. He is appointed by the Chief of Naval Operations to serve as a spokesman to address the issues of enlisted personnel to the highest positions in the Navy. As such, he is the senior enlisted advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations as well as the Chief of Naval Personnel. His exact duties vary, depending on the CNO, though he generally devotes much of his time traveling throughout the Navy observing training and talking to sailors and their families. In 1988, the MCPON's spouse was made the Ombudsman at Large, authorizing her to travel around the fleet with her husband, representing the interests of the spouses of enlisted members.

My hubby took advantage of the education opportunities to finish his degree while in the Navy. Our son is new to the fleet and about two weeks ago attended an information session on PACE and was due to enroll into it on March 25th but apparently the program changed last week and you need to be with the fleet for one year before your can take advantage of this program (?) He did ask his Chief if he could pay for the initial class himself but had not gotten an answer last time we had talked.

Sailors can absolutely go to college while on active duty. Randy's info is correct and also have your son go to https://www.navycollege.navy.mil/ for more information.

Karen,

Your son needs to go to the base's Educational office to see what Colleges have classes there and yes he can take courses while active duty. Some ships also offer classes on long deployments, especially carriers. He can also get Tuition Assistance while in, which will pay 75% to 100% of tuition. My son is in A school and also taking college courses. I had enough credits when I retired for a 2 year degree. This is one program I always push, especially to new sailors. I decided to answer your comment, because I am not sure how closely monitored this particular site is, unless the MCPON has someone on his staff that does monitor this site.

Excellent question Dick. My son thinks he has to wait until hes out of the Navy. I know hes looking into a college to go to then but has no college credits while hes been in the Navy.

whats the best way for our sailors to continue with earning college credits while in the navy? Is there a booklet out there that they can use to inform them of how to go about this. Are courses offered online? Costs Etc.
