Hello,Not sure if there's anyone in the group anymore but I thought I would check in.  My son is heading to RTC in one month and has a rating of MT.  He wasn't to sure about going subs but has…Continue

His job is MT. He and I haven't talked in detail so not sure when he will start basic. My impression is he has to wait a bit to start.

Photos from my recent visit to Kingsbay and St. Mary's GA. The base is quite impressive. St. Mary's is a beautiful little community. Nice submarine museum!

Visited my son in Kingsbay last month. Time to load a few photos of public areas. The base is really impressive. The MWR is world class. Sure beats the recreation centers we had back in the 70s.

Son is now in GA! Really likes his quarters. Fortunately he has a good buddy already stationed there that went though Boot Camp with him. So he is in good company for learning his way around the base.

My wife and I are planning  trip out in May to go visit.

FYI - his official school start date isn't until the summer.

Correction on ATT - that stands for Apprentice Technical Training.

Basic Enlisted Sub School. You will find a fairly active BESS group here. Everyone MUST get through BESS to move on in the fleet. Be advised that this si where the Navy starts to separate the wheat from the chaff! Frankly the majority of the young men that wash out probably decided back in basic that they wanted any way out of the Navy. But some do find that they do not like the convines of a sub or panic in the water drills.

My son had a BLAST at BESS! Really enjoyed the experience. Said there was a lot to learn and they pull watch rotations fairly quickly so sleep is precious when they get it. Food was a big improvement over basic at RTC. That and the room arrangement.

BESS is a part of A-school if you will. MTs then go to BMS, Basic Mechanical Systems, then ATT Advanced Technical Training. After ATT they shipout for GA and six-months, minimum, of C-school.

Oh, when they get to Groton they can have cell phones! Makes the calls home to family a lot easier.

Thanks Mitch, I have been studying the CTA web page & it looks pretty easy to navigate around. It looks like a straight shot in on the Orange Line to & from Midway Airport & then the Metra to & from Ogilvie to Great Lakes. By the way, I have some questions. What is BESS? I guess it is sub school? How long does it last? Is it the same thing as A school? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Michael. Getting downtown is not a problem. The train "the Metra" is just next to the base. Not sure about transportation from the airport. I am in the Chicago area, if you have any questions. Jack has been a great source of information to me, as his son is ahead of mine.

Thanks for the comment Jack. I have my flight & motel already reserved. I am going to go & instead of renting a car I am going to have fun with the mass transportation system of Chicago & vicinity. The motel that I have will have a shuttle to the grad ceremony. I am really looking forward to seeing him again. My daughter & his wife are planning on attending also.

Hey Micahael - good luck to your son at Basic. Hope you can make the PIR - it is worth the trip! See the PIR section for more info, logistics, etc.

Once he gets to BESS life really gets serious! The chiefs don't cut anyone any slack. But the sailors have more liberty on the weekend and there is a lot more to do both on and off base.

My son has been in basic for one week. States that when he is thru with basic he will go to Groton for subschool & his rate (ing) will be Missile Tech. I am excited for him.
