Ok I don't live in Mississippi yet(10 months) but wanted to join this group. Our son will be moving to Georgia next month for shore duty at Kings Bay. Currently he's on the USS Louisiana as a FT2. We are retiring and moving from California and already have a place in Crystal Springs.

Thought I would check-in to the comments.  Our youngest, Bridgette, is a FC3 assigned to the the pre-commissioning crew of the USS Arlinton being built in Mississippi.  We live in French Camp between to of the cities in item #1.  Our daughter got underway Monday on the USS Austin for some training.  She texted me this morning to say that the lobster for breakfast was great!  They are in Maine for the Lobster Festival.

ships move around all the time....best place to see where various ships are generally (OPSEC----remember) is Navy Times as they have maps in the editions

I don't think too many people are aware of the site is the reason why. I found it by accident.

James,

Welcome to the group. As you've noticed this might be the least active group on the site. I wonder why? Not to many Mississippi Sailors in the Navy I guess. My son was known as Mississippi while in boot camp. But, Hey! we now have a new Sub representing. The USS Mississippi, HooYah!

LOL My job does have its benefits. I don't know the name but will keep my ears open. James got his first call wed. and it was great. While a little homesick he is focused and looking to complete the job at hand to the best of his ability. I wish I had his drive. We are very proud of him.

Larry if you get a chance this summer, drive by the house and drop some of that Blue Bell ice cream. Tell them it's a donation to NavyDads. LOL Maybe it's a small world but my buddy from Laurel is Tony Zadrozny. Evan did the same, he sat us down and asked our opinion. He was home sick for about the first 5 weeks and week 6,7,8 he was just excited about graduating. So James will get better. The first 4 or 5 weeks take forever but towards the last few it seems to fly by. Evan said they kept them to busy to get homesick. James will be a Sailor before you know it. Keep me updated on his progress in Boot. Talk to you soon.

I travel to Byram twice a week and spend most of the week in Laurel. I work for Blue Bell Ice Cream. James is getting better each time we here from him. He is only 17 but a very mature 17. We are very proud of him and know he will do well. He reseached all of this and came to his mother and me for our approval. I think the intial shock of BC got to him at first but with his resolve and will power he is overcoming any doubts fast.

Larry,
Welcome! I'm glad to have another Mississippi dad here. I'm in Brandon, so not far from you. Have friends in Laural. To funny, my Sailor is also James but go's by his middle name Evan. If you have any questions about boot camp, feel free to ask. My son actually loved BC. Also the boot camp group has lots of info in it. James will be fine and you'll be at graduation before you know it. Talk to you soon.
