My son goes to GL in one month. B was in a very tough competition for a NSW SWCC slot and was placed on DEP for that slot, I think 3 or 4 out of a several state region were picked after his PST. Is this the norm? Now, as I look at some of the posts here it appears that some boot camp grads are staying at GL for 2 or 3 months before shipping to SD. IS this normal? My thanks to all that have served are serving and and are preparing themselves to defend our liberty and give hope to those who seek it.

There are no dumb questions. I forget how long mine stayed at GL, I think it varies on a number of things; generally they go when the classes are about to start. Best wishes to him. Re tough competition, I think there are a lot of elite athletes in these groups which kicks it up a notch.
My son spent 8 months "waiting" before becoming an official DEPper. It was then another 6 months before starting boot camp, where the SW recruits were in the same division. The official SEAL/SWCC website has a good overview & short videos of the training , from BUDs Prep at GL to SQT. The length of time at GL can be affected by several factors, including the recruits fitness. The BUDs Prep phase was started a few years ago, to allow the SW recruits some time to get back in (or into) "top PT" shape prior to SD. As noted thruout the various threads here, it is a long, tough road from prep to Trident. In spite of the "bashing" that the younger generation frequently gets in the media, it is awe-inspiring that there are so many recruits graduating boot camp, and the numbers that are pursuing SW.
My son really likes the prep - they've got great coaches/mentors/teachers, and are developing the "team" philosophy.
My hope is they all stay healthy and are able to meet their goals.
HooYah!!
