My son was accepted into the SEAL EOD training but because he has British and Canadian citizenship he is required to renounce those. The British one is a simple application but the Canadfian one requires that he have an address in the US before he can make application, so he was advised to take another route (job) so that he could obtain a US address and apply to the Canadian government after which he would switch to the original EOD training. Now he tells me he has heard that may not be possible. He received the suggestion from the recruiting office and did exactly what they advised him to do. Does anyone know if this is indeed a possibility?

Yes I understand that you cannot have dual citenship to be in Special Forces.....he does have US citizenship. He needs to have a US address before he can make application to the Canadian government to renounce his citizenship and now that he is in boot camp and will be graduating this Friday he will have a US address to do that. However on the advice of his recruiter he is going to be training to be a medic, but at the same time he would be applying to renounce his Canadian citizenship which they told him would enable him to join the EOD training once he finished medic training, however he has heard rumours he tells me that, that is not possible. I am looking to find out if that is accurate or not.
Thanks for your reply Jim.....My son and I both live in Canada although he has US citizenship as well as British and Canadian which is why this situation has happened. Thanks for your input.

John, I assume you live in the US and your son was living with you. Your address would be his last official US address. I would get the information you seek from another source other than the recruiter. I would start with the Public Affairs Office at RTC.
Recruit Training Command

Thanks for your reply and valuable information. I would have similar thoughts but that is what the recruiting office suggested when he ran into the brick wall of the Canadian government.

I don't think they would put in the hours and the money to train someone to be a Medic just to have they quit and go to EOD, that would be a big waste of money and time on the Navy's part. The Navy is under a budget and I think I heard somewhere that someone who wants to change Rates has to go through his or her command.
My recommendation would be to call:
NCC Steve Tooker
Steve.Tooker@Navy.Mil
619 522-3393
He is the West Coast Recuiter and should know the answer or at least point you in the right direction
