Navy Dads

I've looked up Rates and Ranks and I find it all very confusing. First off, what's the difference between HM and HN? My Corpsman is an HN, E-3. He said he just made Third Class, getting promoted one paygrade. So what does that mean exactly. E-1 through E-whatever are pay rates from what I've read, so I thought that would mean he's now an E-4, but he didn't say that. Are there more than one paygrade within E-3? Why is this all so confusing to me?

Congrats and BZ to your Son PO3 or more appropriately HM3! There's only one paygrade within E-3 http://www.military.com/navy/enlisted-rates.html

The Es are the pay grades.  If he got promoted from E3 he's an E4.  In the Navy the ratings confuse me too.  I was in the Army and knew lots of AF people, rank and paygrade were interchangeable.  I'm pretty sure pay grade and rating are not interchangeable in the Navy, but I'm not clear how it works.

The Navy is weird in the way our rank system works. Our ranks are entertwined with our jobs. A Corpsman is going to have the job code of "HM" now our ranks are HR,HA,HN E1-E3 once you become a Petty Officer is when you start seeing them using the HM designator followed by a number which signifies their rank. HM3/Corpsman Petty Officer 3rd Class/ E4, HM2/E5, HM1/E6. Hope that helps.
