Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

Am currently listening to "Enterprise" while I commute and have to agree Bill- it is a great book!

Paul and Ralph, both look like good books. Will have to put them on the list. Still reading "Enterprise". If you are a WWII history buff and like carriers, it is a great book so far about the fightingest ship in the Navy (CV-6)!!

Finished listening to this morning:

The true story of the World War II Pacific naval battle that pitted the USS Intrepid's naval aviators against Japan's superbattleship Musashi...and made a dramatic difference in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

October 24, 1944: As World War II raged, six young American torpedo bombers were sent on a search-and-destroy mission in the Sibuyan Sea. Their target: the superbattleship Musashi, the pride of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The pilots were tasked with preventing the immense enemy warship from inflicting damage on American supply ships. Little did these men know that they had embarked on the opening round of history’s greatest—and last—epic naval battle.

Two bomber crews launched in the first wave of attackers were shot out of the sky. Only pilot Will Fletcher survived the crash landing. Adrift at sea, Will made his way to land and escaped into the jungles of the Philippines, where he eluded capture by the Japanese with the help of Filipino guerrillas, whose ranks he joined to fight against their common enemy.

Intrepid Aviators is the thrilling true story of these brave bomber pilots, their daring duel with the Musashi, and Will Fletcher’s struggle to survive as a guerrilla soldier. The sinking of Musashi inflicted a crucial blow in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and marked the first time in history that aviators sank a Japanese battleship on the high seas.

Great book- but reads like a history book with lots of details!!!!

Finished reading Through Fire and Water: HMS Ardent The Forgotten Frigate of the Falklands. It was a little difficult undstanding the terminology, but was a fasinating read. It focused mostly on the crew, their experiences and antics leading up to their engagement, and the impact of losing their ship on their lives. The actual war was covered to lesser extent. Make no mistake, that was a war. Give it a read if you want a little change of pace.

So it really was about Iraqis and not good scotch?? :-) Really good point Bob about the things we take for granted! No matter how difficult things may have been for our ancestors, it was still a HUGE leap of faith to migrate to this country. God Bless them for having that courage so we could enjoy the benefits of this country!

I am still reading through Enterprise. Good historical perspective on the Big E. The Navy officially recognized 41 battles at sea during WW II. The Big E was involved in 20 of them! Also, since my son is stationed in Norfolk, I am simultaneously reading "Naval Station Norfolk (Images of America)" just released on 24 February. It was authored by the Hampton Roads Naval Historical Foundation. Very good summary of the history and many, many pictures.

Finally, last night I watched one of my newest Navy movie acquisitions "They Were Expendable" released in 1945 with John Wayne, Robert Montgomery, and Donna Reed. Excellent movie depicting the role of the PT Boats in the Philippines during WW II. Definitely a classic!

It wasn't a bad book!  Got tired of the Iraqi accent and there were some parts that didn't really appeal to me, but learned a lot about the Shiite/Sunni  conflict and history of Iraq. The last part was a good reminder about the things we take for granted here in the US.  We forget about the experience immigrants have when they come to our shores (legally !!!!!!!!!).  I'm lucky as my mom came to the US in 1951 and I was always aware from stories and discussion of that experience....

my next audio book:

In this illuminating and informative memoir, an Iraqi translator who risked his life working with American Sniper author Chris Kyle and the Navy SEALs tells his remarkable and inspiring story, offering a refreshing new perspective on the Iraq War. As the insurgency in Iraq intensified following the American invasion, U.S. Navy SEALs were called upon to root terrorists from their lairs. Unsure of the local neighborhoods and unable to speak the local languages, they came to rely on one man to guide them and watch their backs. He was a "terp" - an interpreter - with a job so dangerous they couldn't even use his real name.

Paul, I hear you! I look back and am just amazed at how quickly time has passed. Clocks need to come equipped with brakes!
