On 22 February 1943, USS Iowa (BB-61), the lead ship of the last class of American fast battleships, was commissioned. Decomissioned after serving in the Pacific during World War II, she was recommissioned in 1951 for service in the Korean War and was decommissioned again in 1958. In 1984, she was recommissioned and served until Oct 1990.

USS Iowa (BB-61). Commissioning ceremonies on the ship's after deck, at the New York Navy Yard, NY, 22 February 1943. Note: Mark 38 main battery director with Mark 8 fire control radar on top, 16"/50 triple gun turret, freshly raised National Ensign, and incomplete condition of some features of the ship's after superstructure. On 28 July 1945, USS Callaghan (DD-792) was the last ship sunk by a Japanese kamikaze attack when she hit on radar picket station approximately 50 miles southwest of Okinawa, 25° 43’N, 126° 55’E. USS Pritchett (DD 561) was damaged by the miss of kamikaze as she assisted the destroyer.
