Sandy,

I'm unsure about windows messenger. We use Skype and have never had problems with it and it's free. Our son is able to access internet onboard while the ship is in dock and every once in a while when they are out we receive a message via Facebook from him. He has a smart phone so they may be why he is able to do that. Also, it's usually the norm while they are out to NOT be able to communicate with them...safety reasons. But it has seemed to us that most ports that they visit allow them internet access. I'm sure that you'll hear many varied stories on here. We have come to learn that having a child in the Navy is like a box of chocolates..you never know what you are going to get. But be patient and eventually you and your Sailor will figure the best and easiest way to communicate.

Suzi, sometimes it's just where they are needed.  my daughter had a couple request her when she was told she had to leave the ME.  If they do a good job and are motivated they do get noticed and the admirals do talk.  sometimes it's a matter of what is best for their advancement.  I'm glad he and you both will have a friend to lean on. and of course we are all here for you.

Blondie - Yes, Lynch will go to Tinker AFB. He was not thrilled at first, but after some research is pleased. I think it will be a good opportunity for him. And, he has since found out a couple friend have the same orders. I have a friend whose son will follow mine by a week, so that is nice. I was just worried because I didn't know how the decisions were made. Did he do something wrong to change his path? He's not top of his class, but is currently 4th, so it should not have been grades. He's watchbill coordinator, so it's not that he is screwing off....but you know Mom....she has to know the who, what, when, why and how... :)

We got Lynch the Droid and he can get internet on his laptop with it.

I am glad this subject was brought up. I have been wondering how I am going to communicate with my sailor son once he is on ship.

I wonder if Windows Live Messanger works just as well?

Is it true that Sailors are not allowed internet aboard a ship when stationed over seas?

so, is this like a credit card thing you insert into your computer? for internet access? do you buy minutes? or pay so much per month????

thanks paul, but still don't understand. sorry.  I have Yahoo e-mail?  probably doesn't matter there is a 14 hour timie difference with us and she works days one month and then nights the next and she's on a 3-2-2 rotation, we hardly ever get to talk or communicate we just leave messages lol.  I use to know her schedule by heart, but since getting back from Japan I've been messed up and they are getting ready to leave (if they haven't already) so she's wroking almost 24/7.
