I am just not new to the Navy. Retirement did not end my contact with the military. We need to recognize that things do change. The joy felt at knowing your child (though they are an adult )is safe at PIR will never change.

crystal, BC has changed yet again, my daughter says it's nothing like what she went through. not sure if that's good or bad. but they need to be strict, and get one mind set, never hurt anyone. but haven't heard anyone say they wanted to do it again. even my daughter who loved it.
James, you're right, even the old vets. still have the respect and .....can't put it into words, but they have it honor maybe?!

I want you all to realize I am not new to the navy. I was hospital corpsmans 1975 to 1979. Married to sailor 1977 to 1083. Then Married to and retired with Sailor 1984 to present. Have been there and done it. Lived on and off base. Used my GI Bill for nursing school. My son has just re enlisted in May 2010. So I have earned the title Sailor, Sailor's wife, and Mother of a sailor. When I went to A school in Great Lakes we were not treated like they treat the sailors today. We flew in from boot camp other places. ORLANDO FL for females and some males. We could wear civilian clothes when we were off duty. Did not have to earn the privilige. So when my son was treated like he was a child I was shocked.Tu this day both my husband and I find it strange that todays sailors are treated so differently.Military bearing is brain washed into you with sleep deprivation excessive activity and no free time in boot camp. Yes you learn to be part of a team and protect eachother. If you went to boot camp you know what I mean. I have never looked back and thought how I would like to do it again. As you can tell I would not do it again. Graduation form boot camp is a once in a lifetime expirence. I was never so glad to see my son. I knew a lot about what he had been through. I had visual confirmation he was alive and well. Have fun with your sailor for the few days or hours you have. Only indoor photos. There is a NEX (Navy Exchange) off Base. You can take your sailor there and buy proud Navy Mom and Dad tee shirts.

Crystal,It all comes down to military bearing...Once instilled it never is deleted (it is in grained down deep in one's hard drive-can not be erased). Attended a State Vet Summit and one can see it still in folks who were discharge 30-40 yrs+....Although, once they get to their first full time duty station life tens to relax a bit but not much...Yes, you son is growing up and the event is truly a proud moment in his and your lives.

We only took the cell phone. They can not talk on it when walikng . It sounds silly but when in uniform have to stand still and talk. I think because they are suppose to be in uniform at all times we took nothing else.He had to be signed out like a child. That was so they know who they are with for the weekend. They had to call into to muster at 9 pm each night. I wish for you a weekend like we had it was great and so relaxing.

Is he leaving from Great Lakes to A school some where else? Justen stayed in Great Lakes. We gave him his cell phone and he called us in the evening when we could go sign him OUT. He came and stayed at our motel room Friday and Saturday nights. We took him back on Sundat evening by 9PM. We left at 3 am (Mon)to drive back to Northeast Pa. It was the best. Went to the local mall. Looked all over the Base. Looked at old hospital corps school buldings. Spent tons of time in hotel room. Talked and visited and talked some more.
