Navy Dads

I have a daughter in Starbord D in P'cola waiting to class up for Rescue Swimmer School. She has already passed her initial Air Crew basic qualification. As you know, RSS is not a walk in the park, about 70% fail or DOR, and there are very few female RSS's. From what I have learned, if you wash out of RSS, you are put in an "undesignated seaman" classification, and you are dog meat awaiting a decision on what's in the best interest of the Navy, but in any case, you will NOT be placed in a dry Air Crew designation. Does it seem cost effective to put someone through Air Crew basic and then not let them proceed in a dry Air Crew rating if they want, if they don't make it through RSS? Doesn't seem right to me...... comments anyone?

Hi Glenn, my son just finished A school after he completed ACCS and RSS.  He mentioned what you're describing here but he also said that those who don't get through RSS can request to go dry aircrew, might not happen but he seems to think it can be done.  Good luck to your daughter, if she gets through the first week and half of RSS then her chances of making it through increase dramatically.

I would agree with you that it wouldn't be cost effective at all to put folks who made is through ACCS into the undesignated group.

Thanks for your input, Danny. If it were me, I wouldn't do anything in the Navy if it wasn't/didn't have somethiong to do with a plane or chopper. My wife is a NavyMoms.com junkie, knows more stuff then the Secretary of the Navy! We\'re curious, what chopper did your son get, Sierra of Romeo? We here most are getting Sierra now.

Hi Glenn, I would agree with you that doing something with aviation would be the best way to go in the Navy.  My son got Romeo, everyone in his RSS class got Romeo with the exception of one who got Sierra.  At the end of April he heads off to SERE and then FRS in Mayport where he'll be until around January when his training is done.
