Hi Kathleen,
The main difference is the helo itself. The Sierra birds are stripped down and the Romeos are loaded with hi tech gadgets. Romeos spend much longer in training as they have to learn more due to the equipment used. I recommend you join the Aviation Rescue Swimmers Family group on Facebook. They have a ton of files that explain everything in detail.
If you're interested and are on Facebook, send me your FB profile link and I'll add you to the group. You'll have to befriend the admin before you get in though. It's a good group, lot's of family members from swimmers in all different phases of the pipeline and duty.
Hi Navy Dads!
Chuck, my son is also in San Diego, but he will be completing his training in October. He recently changed from a Romeo Squadron to a Sierra Squadron.
Can anyone could explain the differences between Romeo and Sierra Squadron?
Thanks in advance guys!!
Haven't logged in for quite some time. Just dropping in to say hi and that I hope everyone's sailors are doing well. Charlie is in his final days of FRAC in San Diego and looking forward to the road ahead.
Hi Kathleen,
We are all glad to share information. Even though some of us are veterans that knew 'everything' when we served, we realize our kid in service know more than we will ever know about the current Navy. Please know we are all very proud of your son, and pray our sons would be proud to call him "Shipmate".
Hi everyone!
I want to thank you guys for all this information. It is extremely useful for me. That's why I came to NavyDads, looking for more information and support. I don't have any military experience, just my dad and he is not with us anymore. Everything is new for me, but I'm very eager to learn. I promise to look for lingo and slang and try to memorize it! LOL. I don't mind to be corrected so if I make a mistake, please let me know.
Wayne, you are right, my son (Carlos) already knows... he is a Sierra.
Thanks to all your sons for their service. I'm very proud of all our sons.
Welcome to Navy Dads and Navy Rescue Swimmers Kathleen , Yeah my son (Chris) is on North Island also with HSC-6 Indians (Sierra). He has had one deployment on USS Nimitz (68) he saw the world ;). Your son should know if he is Sierra or Romeo by now from Pensacola Florida . Many great people that will show him the ropes in San Diego and also great support . Once he is assigned to a squadron he will go through a lot of training and make friends easily . Chris at this time is coming to the end of 6 years in the Navy . I think 6 months left , and is still thinking of a couple of more years . Anyway welcome and enjoy the ride :)
FRAC is Fleet Replacement Air Crew school. It trains Air Crewmen to join the fleet with knowledge of the aircraft, be it fixed wing or helicopters. They learn the normal procedures of an air crewman, and a lot of emergency procedures.
Our son is an AW 1st Class Petty officer now, a Rescue Swimmer, and was Sailor of the Year when on shore duty at Whiting Field in Milton Florida. He's now back on sea duty in San Diego with HS-4, and being deployed on the USS Nimitz.
As an old (1960s) Navy helicopter crewman, I'm very proud of our son.
Chris, thank you so much for your words. And yes, I'm very proud of him. My Sailor arrived to SD mid October, so he is still just adapting to the weather and stuff (we are from the Caribbean). The first thing he did in SD was SERE. He told me something about FRAC, but I'm not sure. To be honest, I'm pretty new in this and still learning about almost everything. What is FRAC if you don't mind me asking?
