After farther research development of the USN's AN/AWS-2 Rapid Airborne Mine Clearance System (RAMICS) has been cancelled, it was confirmed in late May.
From the technical point of view, this is a sad loss. RAMICS was unique in using a gun to fire down into the water to sink or destroy underwater mines. The gun, a 30mm MK44, was flexibly mounted on a MH-60H Seahawk along with a LIDAR sensor unit, which used a blue-green laser to locate underwater mines and provide targeting information. Once a mine was located, the gun fired from a distance of 200-500m at a downward angle of 45-60 degrees.
The gun fired special APFSDS ammunition with a blunt tip to make it supercavitating, reducing the drag enough for it to remain effective at considerable depths. Tests showed that it was capable of deflagrating a mine down to 13m depth; causing rapid sinking down to 45m; and slow sinking of mines at 60m.
The programme ran into some technical problems with the sensor package and gun mounting which made it late and over-budget, and was cancelled to save money. The USN will instead use a modified version of Raytheon's AN/AQS-235 Airborne Mine Neutralisation System (AMNS) which uses the BAE Archerfish unmanned underwater vehicle to destroy mines. This is already in service to deal with deep mines, and will now deal with shallow ones as well.
Counting down the days when Chris graduates A-school and gets his P.O.3rd class ... August 10th back to Pensacola
Thanks Wayne, I think I fixed it. Once again, for your viewing pleasure, some 50 cal action from my son Tom at Autec. Somehow he managed to weasel 800 rounds to practice with when the norm is about 200-300. I wish they had take your Dad to work Day down there!

Congrats Wayne. One more step to the ultimate prize. Robert admitted that he had a hard time through that part of A school.
Just received a call from Chris and he passed his oceanO class in A-school .... Looking at graduation sometime near Aug 10 ...Then he tells me that he is going to San Diego .... so that has changed
Danny I don't think that came through ?
Hi All, here's a quick video of my son Tom finally getting to pop some rounds out of the 50cal at Autec, he was really psyched for this one!!!
Great pics! I'll have to show my son to inspire him.... not that he needs more inspiring, he's pretty pumped already.
He finally got to PST today! Woot!
