Finally!! My son sent me a text that his first day at NACCS is today. Time to man up son!! He's been waiting since October 16th.
Congratulations on your son's advancement, Brad!
FYI... my son went to HS-10, and was very happy. We just got great news that he advanced to Petty Officer 2nd class AWR2! Great news as his carrier the USS George Washington is on its way back home to it's port in Japan.
Hi Dave,
From what I understand, the available FRAC squadrons and numbers of slots for each squadron varies for each graduation Romeo class. In the case of my son, there were 2 available slots for HS-10 in San Diego and 4 available slots for HSM-41 in San Diego. I don't know the hows or whys, but HS-10 was the most coveted squadron. The students ranked #1 & #2 chose this. HSM-41 was considered the second most desirable option. Students #3,4,5,6 chose this. I believe everyone else is in JAX but it's off my radar. I don't know anything about sponsors, though my son has only been in SD a short time. I'm not sure if it is secure to post our sailors email addresses in this forum? If you would like to email me: rickderringer@gmail.com with your son's email, I'll be happy to forward it to mine.
Best of luck,
Doug
Hi Dave, My son is a recent graduate of Romeo school. He's now in San Diego with the HSM-41 Seahawks. He was very disappointed at first about going Romeo. He, too wanted Sierra. Now that he's through the LONG schooling he's glad for it. He thinks the extra training will serve him well in his career. He says all the guys in his squadron are very happy with it. As for the negativity of the instructors... This may be more ignorance than negativity. According to my son, many Romeo instructors are not swimmers (AWR) Odds are your son's current instructor is an AWO. They are qualified to teach the material but may not know the AWR job well enough to really talk about it in depth. From what I understand, there are very few AWRs instructing in the school house. Anyhow, my son is very pleased with his squadron and very pleased that he got Romeo. On a side note... he says that class rank in A school is everything when it comes time to choose a FRAC squadron. Hope this was helpful and best of luck to your son.
Dave, My son is not there yet but my understanding is that Romeo trained sailors are more qualified than Sierras so when it comes time for manning and assignments, they have more options since they can serve on both Romeo and Sierra squadrons but Sierra trained sailors can only serve on board Sierra squadrons. Not official but makes sense to me.
Hi Tom, enjoy the Sunset Grille, it's a nice little place. My son's already done with RSS, he's in Mayport finishing up FRAC and should be done by February at which point he gets deployed somewhere. Good luck to your son with the rest of A school and the rest of his training.
Danny
