My son arrived at RTC last Tuesday, when can I expect mail info from him?

Paul / Doug

Thanks a million for your responses. I am certainly happy to hear that he can have his cell once he is away from RTC.

remember, if he ships out the next day (after PIR) he cannot have a cell at RTC....

Hi LLA,

Absolutely send his cell phone to Pensacola.  In fact, I'm certain he'd appreciate having it for the weekend of PIR in GL.  My son graduated from RSS a couple months ago and is finishing up his Romeo "A" school and leaving Pensacola in a few weeks.  His cell phone has been the main form of communication throughout his training.

Best of luck to your son!

Doug

Hey dads,

After boot camp, what methods of communication do the sailors have available to them in Pensacola?

Can they use their cells? Is internet/email available to them? I am trying to decide if I should send his cell to him after he gets to Pensacola.

Hi lla,
When he first gets there he will be on what's called phase 1 liberty. And yes they cannot leave base and EVERYWHERE they go around base they MUST be in uniform. They move on to phases 2 & 3. Phase 3 they can leave base but must be back by 2200.. They go through what's called a pipeline. He first must complete Air Candidate School before getting into RSS. With all the holds and so forth , my son was there about 2 months before getting into RSS, we can talk more about RSS once he gets there. About his PIR. We were flying out the same day as him so we were able to get past security. If your not flying out that day, TSA will not let you back there. The USO is outside security there but it gets quite crowded there. My wife is on Navy for moms and they have been very informative also. They also have a page, moms of aviation rescue swimmers ! I travel all week so when I get home I will friend you on here and tell you some personnel information that my son has shared with me ! Its pretty good stuff. Tom

I see from some of the posts that RSS students are allowed some free time on weekends? Are they allowed off base during the week or are they restricted to the base? My son mentioned to me that he would not be allowed to leave the base at all. Of course he is still in boot camp. 9 DTG till PIR!!
