My son Garrett is expected to fly off the George Washington when the USS Shiloh joins them in a couple of weeks to be part of the handfull of AW's for the Helo it carries. Looks like the Cowpens wont be ready in time so that is why the switch for Det Alpha to the Shiloh. He is still working on the TSO qual, and may have to fly back onto the GW when ready to stand boards to complete it. He still has some flights to do!

A quick note to say I posted some pics of my daughter's wedding to her Marine as she prepares to go to OCS herself June 3. I got all choked up saying the toast, especially when I had to announce my son missing this out on the USS Geaorge Washington which I was interrupted with appluse honoring him, then saying the e-mail he sent the night before for me to say to his sister. Afterwards, I asked all current and former military to stand, and before I could ask, the whole place erupted in thunderous applause. It was the hardest speech I have ever made, but I am so glad I did. I don't know, maybe I can post it somehow. Regardless, a moment to remember!

My son Garrett was sent back on the GW just as they were to leave for their three week or so initial cruise. His main purpose will be to complete his TSO qual. Dissappointed only because he was to go on the Cowpens cruiser as one of 4 AW/Rescue swimmers, but it was down for service. We were hoping he could come home for his sister's wedding this Sat 5/22, since the Cowpens wasn't scheduled to leave until June. His sister understands though, she is marrying a newly commissioned 2nd LT in the Marines, and is scheduled to go to OCS for the Marines herself June 3rd to become a 2nd LT. Pray for nice weather in Central Florida on 5/22!! Let us remember Garrett's sacrafice at the wedding, along with all of your sailor's sacrafices to all of us every day.

Robert, AIR R is the only avenue to becoming an aviation rescue swimmer. Once complete with the pipeline training: NACCS, RSS AW A and the FRS he will be an AW. The surface community has surface rescue swimmers, but they do not fly and perform their duties as collateral assignments.

I would encourage John Dungan to respond on your question Robert. I know that my son had been told at one point back in 2007, that there may have been on e or two other ratings, BUT by far the rating that uses them the most with the best opportunities for saves and advancement would be in AW where they are on helicopter missions and available for more situations that may need AIRR. Hopefully John can bring more to this with his vast experience in this area.

Welcome to the group Darel's Princess. I assume your boyfriend has chosen AW and/or AIRR to be a rescue swimmer? We hope to give you information as he moves through the process. Let us know how we can help.

it feels pretty odd after all these years to now only have son Eric in the Navy....there was something special about having both kids serve...now that I have only one I feel somewhat empty !!! LOL!!!!

Robert, that is great you followed your heart. Thank you for being brave with your selection, and for raising your children positively. I am sure you have given your son medical knowledge that you have learned as a first responder. He will have an advantage in RSS on the medical training when he gets to Pensacola after Great Lakes. He will need to be in awesome shape in RSS for they will push them hard physically, then at the end no mistakes on the medical part or your gone. I am sure you will prepare him well. Thank you for serving your community!
