Hello group. Just navigating site and glad this group is here. My son Sean is at Great Lakes with a PIR scheduled for Nov 13th, then on to Pensacola for A school. Look forward to talking with you throughout the progression to his duty assignment. Prayers and thoughts for all sons who chose this duty.

It has been almost a year! So, you are right, I can't wait! A special time for a father son reunion and him showing me around his new world. We will always remember it I am sure. God is good!

An extraordinary thing happend today. I had a trip planed to Hong Kong with my MBA class starting Oct 3, but today Garrett called to say the GW will be slightly delayed in departing for their next tour until after that date now, which can allow for me to re-route to get out and see him in Japan before they leave!! This is unbelievable how God works things to His purpose. I previously checked and no flights were available when needed yet today one seat became available on one of those rare frequent flyer slots. I can't wait now to leave 9/30 and see him 10/1 for two and a half days! It dosen't get much better than this!

Finally spoke with Garrett via Skype. He told me a day or two before the GW came into port he was part of the crew doing a med evac flight for a potential heart attack victim 2.5 hours to Japan to a hospital. One hour in both batteries failed on the heart monitor/defibulator so if the heart stopped they would have to do CPR for the remaining 1.5 hours! Fortnuately they did have to and arrived safely. Then on the way back they had to climb high over a typhoon between them and the GW with 50 knot neg. gain going into the winds! Finally 15 mins from the carrier they got briefed on what happens on complete shut down due to possible lightning strike damage and possible restart if hit as lightning was all around going from cloud to cloud. No hits, but they were all on edge! Quite the flight!

Scott, the Chargers emblem is on the helmets because the squadron he is with is the HS-14 Chargers. You can google them and read about their history, it's pretty cool. The graduation pics in San Diego was for getting his "wings", which will be after A school in Pensacola. You need to go to Pensacola graduation for it is one of the toughest schools to get through next to the Seals. 50% attrition or more, so your support will be important and being there at the end will be something he and you will strive for. I may have some pics of that graduation too, I will look. Very small in comparision to Great Lakes graduation. Once he gets through A school he will get orders for the next school which will depend on which group he trains with. My son got the chance to pick since he was in the top of his class and wanted HS which included sonar, others got what was left and did not go to San Deigo. He will go through many opportunities and possible choices which we can help you learn about hear. Good luck to him! We look forward to hearing how he moves through the process.

Yesterday I got to see Garrett on Skype for Manilla in the Philippiens. The GW is the first carrier to port there in 13 years. Due to the long time since the US has been there, he and others have not enjoyed this stop. They were not prepard with service providers (cab drivers, etc.) that could communicate even a little, making travel difficult at best. He even had to show some how to read their own city map!! Command did not allow overnight stay, and other than their big mall area, things got pretty ugly and unsafe within very short distances. Hopefully this paves the way to better opportunities for future stops by other carrier groups! I believe they have pulled out today, and hopefully to home port in Japan in three weeks.

My son, just had shore leave in Singapore where I had the opportunity to see him via Skype & webcam! He finished his qual for PC (plane captian) and is the only AW on the USS George Washington with it. This is for inspecting the Helo's when on the carrier and all activites related once they land. While not required, his command prefers AW's to have it. Garrett will now be the lead trainer for the rest of the AW's on the ship even though he is only AW3. He hopes this will assist him with his effort to get 2nd class at the next testing period in the fall. He says pictures are coming for the Talisman Saber 09 they participated with the Australians and he was flying looking back showing the HS-14 Chargers show Helo and the GW in the background. Will forward when it arrives.

Dan, I agree with Brian in that he needs to be firm that he wants Aircrew (wet). Two years ago that meant my son had to add AW as the rating. I would research what the rating requirement is now though. ASVAB is good for only two years I beleive so....

Sounds like his score just makes it with the 213, and that does sound about right needing 210 as I recall. Make sure MEPS agrees with his recruiter that the score will work.

During deferred entry he needs to work hard on the sit ups and push ups with the various types they will be required to do. My son just did the normal ones and had a hard time adapting to the very unique types they have them do at RSS. One type of sit up is no one holding legs and feet MUST stay flat and never lift throughout or the sit up doesn't count. I would have him doing multiple sets at least twice a day to be ready. My son wishes someone would have told him what was coming to prepare for it. Let us know how your son progresses Dan.
